An American woman and her son stumble upon the dark history of a rambling English manor house in this masterful, riveting, and atmospheric (Alka Joshi, author of The Henna Artist) novel from New York Times bestselling author Lauren Belfer. With vibrant prose, Lauren Belfer shepherds us through a centuries-old mystery and into a modern-day introspection on motherhood, marriage, and love.Georgia Hunter, New York Times bestselling author of We Were the Lucky Ones When a close relative falls ill, Hannah Larson and her young son, Nicky, join him for the summer at Ashton Hall, a historic manor house outside Cambridge, England. A frustrated academic whose ambitions have been subsumed by the challenges of raising her beloved child, Hannah longs to escape her life in New York City, where her marriage has been upended by a recently discovered and devastating betrayal. Soon after their arrival, ever-curious Nicky finds the skeletal remains of a woman walled into a forgotten part of the manor, and Hannah is pulled into an all-consuming quest for answers, Nicky close by her side. Working from clues in centuries-old ledgers showing what the womans household spent on everything from music to medicine; lists of books checked out of the library; and the troubling personal papers of the long-departed family, Hannah begins to recreate the Ashton Hall of the Elizabethan era in all its color and conflict. As the multilayered secrets of her own life begin to unravel, Hannah comes to realize that Ashton Halls women before her had lives not so different from her own, and she confronts what mothers throughout history have had to do to secure their independence and protect their children. Infused with the brooding, gothic atmosphere of Jane Eyre or Rebecca (Melanie Benjamin, author of The Childrens Blizzard) and rich with female passion, strength, and ferocity across the ages, Ashton Hall is a novel that reveals how the most profound hauntings are within ourselves.

The main character visits Oxburgh Hall & “tours” the “priest hole.”The hole was “built” 400+ yrs ago at a time of “a flowering of culture against a backdrop of religious suppression,torture,&disease..”〰️”400 yrs from now, is this how Anne Frank‘s attic would be viewed? After…the trauma had faded, would the attic evolve into something fun for kids to see because it was gruesome, the horrifying truth rewritten to make the site more visitor-friendly?”

“I knew that one of the biggest roadblocks to understanding history was the false notion that the individuals of the past were more or less like us, thought like us, and would do only things we would do.” —Hannah Larson (main character) p.276

So, I rarely find a book that I don‘t like; and this book had a lot of potential. I liked the premise and the fact that the author brought in sexual identity and neurodiversity in her characters. However, everything was too much for me — too much angst, too much personal drama. I felt like Ron Weasley when he said that a person couldn‘t feel all those things or they would explode. I almost bailed but I needed to find out how it ended.

This book was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a twisty thriller but this was more of a historical mystery. There were several pieces of the plot besides the mystery that made this book so good. Just to keep from spoilers I won‘t mention them but they are very important issues and the author approached them very well.

I received a copy of this book courtesy of the publisher via Goodreads Giveaways in exchange for an honest review.

I knew I‘d love ASHTON HALL right from the start, with its immersive narrative voice and strong familial themes, and it only gets better as it rolls along. The historical conundrum at the story‘s heart would be a compelling hook all by itself, but the framework for self-reflection with which it provides Hannah elevates this to something truly spectacular. I read the last 150 pages in one sitting.

4.5 stars; caveat below. #AuldLangSpine

xicanti I can appreciate Kevin as a reflection of all the Tudor-era marital concerns Hannah grapples with as she pieces together Isabella‘s life. He‘s awful in ways that transcend the centuries, and that fits well with the book‘s themes. I can also be really, really disappointed with how he plays into the Selfish/Evil Bisexual stereotype. 2y
monalyisha Nice! I want to read that spoiler so bad. 😅🙈 I will refrain. (edited) 2y
xicanti @monalyisha it‘s a rep-related spoiler, but I fear it‘s a VERY BIG ONE. So, best not to tap. 2y

MeganAnn Yay!! This was one I happened to come across on my library‘s new releases shelf and picked up to fit my mood at the time. It had not come across my radar at all before that and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it. 🎉 Excellent review!! 2y
xicanti @MeganAnn I hadn‘t heard of it either until it showed up on your list! I‘m gonna have to look for Belfer‘s earlier books, too. 2y
MeganAnn And I completely agree with your thoughts on Kevin as a reflection of Tudor-era marriages. Your caveat is a great point I hadn‘t previously considered… mostly because I don‘t think I‘ve actually read many (any?) storylines with that stereotype. He definitely plays into that though. Thank you for pointing it out. 2y

There is a lot going on in this book: in the modern-day storyline, LGBTQ+ and women‘s issues, marital problems, family, relationships, parenting neurodiverse children, and more. Running beneath all of that is the historical mystery, almost gothic in nature, of a Tudor-era woman‘s remains found walled up in the manor. Really good writing, well-researched subject matter, and endearing characters. After a slow start, I loved this book.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

sprainedbrain This was my #DoubleSpin, read before my actual #BookSpin, because library expiration dates rule my life. 😂 (edited) 2y

I have mixed feelings about this one--she confronts some timely issues regarding LGBTQ families, marital struggles, the difficulties of parenting a neurodiverse child. It's clear the author has done a lot of research to inform this novel and I loved the historical mystery storyline. Not a bad book, just not my favorite from this writer.

I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
