One of the foundational works of military history and political philosophy, and an inspiration for Alexander the Great, The Anabasis of Cyrus recounts the epic story of the Ten Thousand, a band of Greek mercenaries hired by Cyrus the Younger to overthrow his brother, Artaxerxes, king of Persia and the most powerful man on earth. It shows how Cyrus' army was assembled covertly and led from the coast of Asia Minor all the way to Babylon; how the Greeks held the field against a superior Persian force; how Cyrus was killed, leaving the Greeks stranded deep within enemy territory; and how many of them overcame countless dangers and found their way back to Greece. Their remarkable success was due especially to the wily and decisive leadership of Xenophon himself, a student of Socrates who had joined the Ten Thousand and, after most of the Greek generals had been murdered, rallied the despondent Greeks, won a position of leadership, and guided them wisely through myriad obstacles. In this new translation of the Anabasis of Cyrus, Wayne Ambler achieves a masterful combination of liveliness and a fidelity to the original uncommon in other versions. Accompanying Ambler's translation is a penetrating interpretive essay by Eric Buzzetti, one that shows Xenophon to be an author who wove a philosophic narrative into his dramatic tale. The translation and interpretive essay encourage renewed study of the Anabasis of Cyrus as a work of political philosophy. They also celebrate its high adventure and its hero's adroit decision-making under the most pressing circumstances.

so-so

It‘s 410 BC & Xenophon leads a 10k strong army of Greek mercenaries, retreating from a failed attempt by their Persian paymaster, Cyrus, to seize the throne from his brother after their father dies. As they make their way back to the Black Sea & eventually Greece, they battle hostile natives & hardships caused by the terrain. Granted, it‘s a classic but it was a bit of a slog. It‘s repetitive & monotonous but, like Xenophon, I got there in the end

The Oilers' PP was exciting. Murray was just amazing and to quote Mike Lange “the Oilers can't buy a goal”. Cam Talbot is pretty good too. Oilers open the third with a penalty and finally Pens score after the penalty is over. 1-0 McJesus scores and ties the game. 1-1 (edited) 6y

Tonight is a great night for hockey. Pens battles to crush the Caps. The Greeks are a little dumb. Twice they sent some of theirs with ships to come back and get them. Never saw them again. They are still marching. #readingandwatchinghockey

writerlibrarian Capitals took out Crosby with a double hot to the head. He's out and ... well...it looks bad. 5m for the hit to Capitals and Geno took a 2m on the next shift. That was a bad hit that followed a hit twice from Ovi to the head. Crosby was on the down on the ice for a whole and didn't get off without help. That is not hockey that's ... just not hockey. Penalties are crushing the Pens. Capitals scored on the PP. Just bad hockey here. (edited) 7y

Saturday is afternoon and night in Canada.the two matches program starts with Karlsson and the Senators battling the Rangers. Then, Sidney Crosby goes to war and will try to push the Pens to a 2-0 series lead against Ovi and the Capitals. I'm almost at 75% of Xenophon's tale war and grit and pillage. #readingandwatchinghockey

writerlibrarian Score is tied at 1. Both Senators and Rangers had bursts of domination that made the game worth watching. Sens and Rangers exchange penalties and goals. Rangers are on top with 1 goal. 3-2 NY. NY adds another goal almost in PP. 4-2 NY. Sens scored early in the 3rd narrowing the game to 4-3 but NY scores again to go back to a 2 goals lead. 3m t go and Sens score. It's 5-4, with 1m to go Sens tie it up. 5-5. We are going into OT. Looks likes Habs came to play too. 2-1 Habs after 1. Fleury pulled save after save then Geno went at it and his line scores. It's 2-0 Pens. writerlibrarian After one period of play, the duo of Bergeron/Marchand struck late in the period to put Boston on the board. 2-0 Boston after one. Chicago scored a weird, weird goal in the second. Panik got pushed inside the bet, got struck by the puck not once but twice. Both Seabrook's and Panarin got hm in the helmet. Weird. Going into the third Boston leads 2-1. Bruins scores but Chicago replies almost immediately. It's 3-2 with a little less than 10 min. (edited) 7y

The Hawks are back home and playing back to back games. Colorado is not really a tough adversary but warriors do not give up. So it's Xenophon to end the week-end while listening to Captain Toews battling the Avs. #readingandlisteningtohockey

Shooting pucks with trafic in front of the net result in goals. Captain Toews scores even if it's not a pretty or quite legal goal. 3-2 Avs with 10 minutes left. In less than 1 minute 3 goals. Chicago leads 4-3. That's hockey. Shoot the puck you get goals. Toews scores and it's 5-3 Hawks. Empty net goal. Hawks win 6-3. (edited) 7y
