Another month down on my #2022readingbracket Death of a Red Heroine was a tough but enjoyable read. I‘m glad I toughed it out.
For the overall 2 month winner, I had to go with The Girls. It was a much quicker and interesting story to me.

Okay, this one took some doing but I finished. ☑️ I had some difficulties with how rigid the language was, however, it makes some sense in the context of the story. Then there were sooo many random poems, couplets, and stanzas littered through out. I added my favorite to the image. #Booked2022 Set in China; #poetrymatters
Still plugging away at the tagged book. It‘s gotten interesting and the random shout outs Chinese poetry to help the story along keep it from being boring.
I‘m also reading Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter on #audio.

“The body was found at 4:40 P.M., on May 11, 1990, in Baili Canal, an out of the way canal, about twenty miles to the west of Shanghai.”

I‘m struggling a bit with this story. I like procedural mysteries but the political slant and the way people speak is making it difficult.
Chief Inspector Chen Cao and Detective Yu Guangming are called upon to investigate the murder of a young woman whose naked body was found dumped in a canal.
It took me a while to get used to the style, especially the dialogue, which struck me as overly formal and rather stilted, but maybe that reflects Chinese speech patterns of the time. It was interesting seeing how a fairly run-of-the-mill whodunnit played out against a Chinese background.
Im slowly reading this series set in communist china in the 90's + in insp cheng the author has created a poetry writing police officer who has to tread a v careful path thru the maze of political sensibilities while investigating crimes that cd rock society + usually has an element involving corrupt politicians. It evokes a sense of place with incredible description of food. Not the best plots but definitely a journey.

I really enjoyed this detective / murder mystery set in 1990s China (mainly Shanghai). Interesting setting and historical details - I know very little of Chinese history - and a good cast of characters. I wasn't really invested in the mystery, just the characters. I'll continue with the series, and I'm also tempted to check out some of the Chinese poetry that Chen is endlessly quoting.*
First book finished during #25infive, letter Q for #litsyatoz
My rather small total for #25infive so far... but all on the tagged book, which I am really enjoying! About halfway through and digging the twists on the usual detective story tropes. Particularly the chief inspector whose true passion is poetry and will talk lit crit and quote TS Eliot at the slightest provocation lol.
Hopefully the second half continues strong.
A fascinating insight into the lives of people in 1990 communist China, party politics, socialist Chinese history, and classic Chinese literature. And yes, there is a murder mystery, too. Perhaps a bit slow as a thriller, but I found the details vivid, educational and thought-provoking. I felt transported. All the exotic food, party cadres, poetry, housing shortage, traffic, philosophy, socialism vs capitalism... a unique blend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⬇️
Finished this #chunky #crimson mystery and was left a bit shaken by the ending. It had more depth than most mysteries and blended life in communist China in the 90s with the homicide case. Party politics play into each aspect of life and the case. A slower read but worthwhile. #litsyatoz #letterX. Only one letter left in this challenge!! U is next. #decdays #seasonsreadings2017
My day started very peacefully - making good headway on my #litsyatoz #letterX - and then I had to shop and cook for the synagogue Chanukah dinner - 2 grocery stores and 200 latkes later - I am wiped out. I love the holidays but oh so draining.
I recently picked this up at a used bookstore because I saw some great review that said it does a really good job of describing Chinese culture wrapped in a suspenseful murder mystery! #Chinagrove #rockinmay

I've read a couple of this series and really enjoyed them. Inspector chen is a police officer in china during the 1990's where the communist party dictate how he should investigate a crime. Really good portrait of life in china including food and living conditions, reminds me to find book no3

Oops I'm playing catchup today. I guess I was too involved in putting up next month's challenge post yesterday!
I love how more crime/mystery/detective fiction is available fr international writers these days.
From top right: Japan, Japan, Southeast Asia (begins w Malaysia), Singapore, China, Laos (although the writer is British and the main character is the chief coroner)
