Excellent. Overuse of the word "eschew," but forgivable. 9/10--would recommend reading the other ones in the series first. There is an incident that mentions a character by the name of Daniel Lapp...the incident is mentioned in Hidden Ones but not explained (which is a very important backstory). Very fun read!

Had to set down Deer Creek Drive when this one arrived. Book 14 in the series. Haven't read one from her in like a year and I missed her writing. In my opinion, one of the best modern crime/thriller writers out there. I just found out that between all of the books in the Burkholder series, there is a 1.5, a 2.5, etc. that are kindle-only. Basically an entire series I missed 😱 Gotta get a kindle

intothehallofbooks I love this series!! Most, if not all, of the novellas are collected in a book called A Simple Murder which you can get in print! 11mo

I have always loved the Amish culture. Such a simple way of life. These mysteries always keep me in suspense.

I absolutely love the Kate Burkholder series, and book 14 did not disappoint! I'm always a bit sad when Kate's investigations take her away from Painter's Creek and the crew we have gotten to know there, but really, it makes sense since how many murderous Amish can there really be in one small town?? 😂 It's not absolutely necessary to read this series in order, but I highly recommend it, as Kate's backstory and character are developed so well⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) throughout the series. The mystery here kept me engaged, and even though I had guessed some of it, I didn't guess it all.

As a side note, I'm in love with Tomasetti 😂

mabell That‘s how I felt when Jessica would leave Cabot Cove! I‘m assuming for the same reason - only so many murders in a small town can be “plausible” 😆 2y

@Cinfhen - Trick move, yesterday's post was last week's photo. HERE is the current status of the Windowsill of Optimism! 😂 Although I took this yesterday morning and have already finished two of the books pictured, including the tagged!! So progress!! #WeeklyForecast - nothing here is urgent (yet) so it should be a week of random draws. I just started Ten Thousand Doors last night and we'll see where we go from here!!

5feet.of.fury I just started that Laura Dave last night, it‘s good so far! 2y
Soubhiville “Windowsill of optimism,” 🤣 I love it! I hope you have a great reading week! 2y

TheAromaofBooks @5feet.of.fury - That is one of my #TrappedonanIsland books this month - there are five books pulled for that challenge and I wanted to read at least one, so we'll see if that one is the lucky winner 😂 It sounds so good, though!! (edited) 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Soubhiville @LitStephanie @Cinfhen - Thank you!!! So many good books, never enough time!!! 😆 2y
5feet.of.fury @TheAromaofBooks was The Obsession one of them too? I can vouch for that one also! 2y

This latest installment in the Kate Burkholder series is another fast & entertaining read! At the request of elders in a PA Amish community, Kate leaves Painters Mill to help investigate an 18 year old cold case that has led to a sudden accusation of an Amish man she knows from her past. It‘s nice to have an equal focus on the plot as on Kate‘s own development- her character has felt a little stagnant but this breathes fresh life to the series!

Monica5 I enjoyed this one, too 2y

Kate Burkholder is the Police Chief of Painters Mill, Ohio. She is approached by the Amish elders of Belleville, Pennsylvania. They came to ask her help with a case, since she was once Amish and understands their ways.

Now Jonas Bowman, one of their own and a guy from Kate's past, is accused of murder. Kate agrees to look into the case.

I wanted to know more about one character, but don't want to say who.

Publishes on July 5, 2022.

This is 14th in a series of which I‘ve only read the first. 🤪 But, even though some things had evolved, I was still following along with the same great cast just fine. Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is asked to journey to PA to help an old friend who has been jailed for an 18 yo murder. Her sleuthing is met with resistance both by the police (out of her jurisdiction) and the killer (violent attacks). This one has coverups, a surprise twist, 🔻

robinb and some more insight into Kate‘s formative years. I love Castillo‘s writing, and her character development is top notch. And this storyline, while maybe a bit over the top with the twist, is still compelling and entertaining. My only unease came from an underage relationship…consensual, but ages 15/19. 🔻 2y
robinb But I will say that in the context of the story and how the relationship was seen from both parties in the future, it was written in a tactful way. Now I need to go back and read the previous 12…LOL. 4.5/5⭐️ 2y
