Rejected Writers' Book Club
Rejected Writers' Book Club | Suzanne Kelman
Librarian Janet Johnson is puzzled when she is invited and practically dragged to her first meeting of the Rejected Writers Book Club. This quirky group of women would much rather celebrate one another s rejected manuscripts over cups of tea and slices of lemon cake than actually publish a book. But good friends are exactly what Janet needs after moving to the small town of Southlea Bay, Washington. Just as the ladies are about to raise a teacup to their five hundredth rejection letter, they receive bad news that could destroy one member s reputation and disband the group forever. To save the club, Janet joins her fellow writers on a wild road trip to San Francisco in search of the local publisher who holds the key to a long-buried secret. As they race to the finish line, they ll face their fears landslides, haunted houses, handsome strangers, ungrateful children and have the time of their lives."

I was looking for something light, fluffy, and quick after a couple of heavy reads, and this definitely fit that. It‘s also rather silly. I was heading for a so-so rating when the fat shaming, which was sprinkled lightly through the book, came hard and heavy at a scene toward the end. This book was published in 2014. Can‘t we do better than this?

GingerAntics Ugh. Pass. Thanks for the heads up, and for taking one for the team. 3y
Librariana Oh, heavy eye roll 🙄 Truly it's unnecessary. 3y

This book is light and cozy, but it took me a relatively long time to get through it, I even thought of DNFing it. While there was a goal behind the road trip these crazy ladies were taking, it was actually a series of minor adventures with minimum tension and predictable outcomes. The story had its moments and I appreciated the theme of celebrating failures, but I didn't like the characters much.
I'm not interested in continuing with the series.

FYI to all Suzanne Kelman fans. You can preorder her newest book for only 99 cents! Releases Oct. 25th. This time she wrote a heart-wrenching historical novel set in 1941 Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. “An incredible story of love, hope and friendship, and a testament to humanity and courage in history‘s darkest days. Perfect for fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Lilac Girls, and The Nightingale.”

This is a fun, light, and quick read about a group of middle-aged women writers who want their manuscripts to be rejected. When one of them gets an acceptance letter, hilarity ensues in the form of a disastrous road trip. Some pretty funny scenes! Read for #LLB19 for a book that features a reader or writer.

Trying something a little different! As a writer with my share of rejections, I can use the levity!

2🌟 This didn't hold my attention well, and when I found out it was part of a series, I was disappointed. I won't be continuing on. There were a couple funny lines in it, which was nice.

This was a sweet story and perfect for the "I want to read, but I don't want to read anything time consuming or serious." It's one of those mindless books we all need once in awhile.

My thoughtful man just brought home a box of donuts to sweeten my weekend #reademandeatathon. Yum-Vanilla French Crullers are my weakness. 😋And this book is a hoot! These quirky women have been bitten by too many rejection letters, so they form a club to support each other's creative writing. The plot thickens when one of them may actually get published and they enlist their local librarian to save the day. Too funny! @Read.Em.And.Eat

Uh oh, between work and my mom's cable going out, I couldn't get to the #reademandeatathon until now. 🙄Can I still catch the tail end of it? Thought I'd grab some El Pollo Loco along with an ebook title I couldn't resist. It's only 7:30 in CA. 👍🏻

Read.Em.And.Eat Of course! We still have a full 24 hours to go! Welcome aboard! 👋🏻💖 7y

☆☆☆☆
I really enjoyed this novel. The ladies of The Rejected Writer's Bookclub are quirky and hilarious.
When the Southlea librarian, Janet, is drawn into their group, hijinks ensue.
The ladies have a series of improbable adventures on a road trip to San Francisco.
I will definitely give the next book in the series a read.

Bought my book and journal for the not-yet-named book club yesterday. Stupid thing says it won't arrive for weeks! Grrrrrrr.... I wish I wasn't so dependent on Amazon Prime. @Soubhiville

Soubhiville Uh oh... can you cancel the order and go to a local bookstore? 7y
Carleneishere The local bookstore would have to order it specially and then we'd have to wait for a barge shipment to come to the island for commercial deliveries :-( I'll see if I can find a different book @Soubhiville 7y
BookHermit What about sending it via Amazon direct to your recipient? Not as personal but very quick 🙂 7y
Soubhiville @BookHermit that's a good idea, you could send a separate package with your notes to post inside. 7y

The was a fun and entertaining story about a group of women who meet regularly to celebrate they rejected letters from publishers. The characters were well developed and the story was smooth. I great choice for a book club.
