My First Popsicle
My First Popsicle: An Anthology of Food and Feelings | Zosia Mamet
6 posts | 4 read | 8 to read
With an incredible list of celebrated contributors including DAVID SEDARIS, NAOMI FRY, PATTI SMITH, SIAN CLIFFORD and JIA TOLENTINO, My First Popsicle revels in the delights of food in all its forms. Edited by ZOSIA MAMET - Shoshanna in Girls - this is a riotous, mouth-watering celebration of jelly, mac and cheese, donuts, the best sandwich in the entire world - and much more. Of all the essentials for survival: oxygen, water, sleep and food, only food is a vast treasure trove of memory and of sensory experience. Food is a portal to culture, to times past, to disgust, to comfort, to love: no matter one's feelings about a particular dish, they are hardly ever neutral. In My First Popsicle, Zosia Mamet has curated some of the most prominent voices in art and culture to tackle the topic of food in its elegance, its profundity and its incidental charm. With contributions from David Sedaris on the joy of a hot dog, Jia Tolentino on the chicken dish she makes to escape reality, Patti Smith on memories of her mother's Poor Man's Cake, Busy Philipps on the struggle to escape the patterns of childhood favourites and more, My First Popsicle is as much an ode to food and emotion as it is to life. After all, the two are inseparable.

Meg! Look what‘s just arrived! Henry loves his squirrel - he‘s being very gentle with it at the moment, just squeaking it quietly…. 😁 As you can see, it‘s the perfect size for him too. His birthday card is ever so cute too - I wanted to include it in the picture, along with the book, but it was difficult enough to get a picture with just the toy!

Thank you for the book as well - it sounded great when both you and @Cinfhen read it. 😘

MicheleinPhilly Hey there, handsome! 🥰 2y
Soubhiville Look how big he‘s gotten! What a gorgeous boy. 🐶💙 2y
squirrelbrain Also, Meg, the wrapping was beautiful, and I‘m so excited to have a Parnassus Books bookmark - makes me feel like part of an exclusive club! 2y

This exceeded my high-ish expectations somehow! I really loved it - the vibe and variety just worked for me. Definitely fun that a lot of the writers narrated their own pieces, with engaging pros doing the rest. Also fun that there were several holiday-themed essays (unsurprising when the topic is food and feelings!). I could see myself revisiting this one, either in audio again or in print.

Lynnsoprano Sounds like fun! Stacked 😄 2y
DinoMom This sounds great . Stacked it! 2y
Christine @Lynnsoprano @DinoMom It does have some darker moments but I found it very enjoyable overall - hope you do, too! ❤️💚 2y

An anthology/ cookbook - “celebrities” reflecting on their favorite food/ meal that holds special memories for them. It‘s a really solid collection and some essays are really good 🤗I enjoyed the multicast narration and my Audible copy has an accompanying PDF, which includes recipes. This was a nice distraction while I ran errands, prepared dinner and washed dishes. Thanks for sharing @Megabooks 💟

tpixie How do you find the PDFs? Is it on the website? Can you find them on the app?? Thanks 2y
Cinfhen When I purchased the audio through Audible it included the PDF which I was able to access both on the site and through the app @tpixie it said this audio contains a PDF so I knew to look for it. Hope that helps. 2y

An #anthology of food & feelings from minor & not so minor celebrities 🍽 This was put on my #readersradar from the awesome @Megabooks and it‘s really entertaining. Some essays are better than others but a lovey distraction while I prepare dinner 🍔🥗🥔 #NonfictionNovember

Megabooks 💯 fun but some are definitely better than others 2y

Mamet had such an interesting idea to get celebrities and authors to write about significant food experiences. The audiobook is well done with multiple narrators. My favorites were David Sedaris about hot dogs (but he does not read his own essay) and another person about being depressed after being dumped (on Valentine‘s!) and eating depression Spaghetti-Os. I think recipes are included with the print book, but for me it‘s a #BorrowNotBuy #NFNov

Cinfhen This sounds fun!! I‘ll look to #Borrow 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it‘s a great borrow title!! 2y
AnnR Good (library) choice. 🙂👍 2y
