The World Record Book of Racist Stories
The World Record Book of Racist Stories | Amber Ruffin, Lacey Lamar
A new collection of hilarious, intergenerational anecdotes full of absurd detail about everyday experiences of racism from the New York Times bestselling authors of Youll Never Believe What Happened to Lacey, comedian Amber Ruffin and her sister Lacey. Families may not always see eye to eye; we get on each others nerves, have different perspectives and livesespecially when we consider how we've grown up in different generations. But for the Ruffin family and many others, there has been one constant that connects them: racism hasnt gone anywhere. From her raucous musical numbers to turning upsetting news into laughs as the host of The Amber Ruffin Show or in her Late Night with Seth Meyers segments, Amber is no stranger to finding the funny wherever she looks. With equal parts heart and humor, she and her sister Lacey Lamar shared some of the eye-opening and outrageous experiences Lacey had faced in Nebraska in their first book. Now, the dynamic duo makes it clearLacey isnt the only one in the family with ridiculous encounters to share! Amber and Lacey have many more uproarious stories, both from their own lives and the entire Ruffin family. Recounting the wildest tales of racism from their parents, their siblings, and Ambers nieces and nephews, this intergenerational look at ludicrous (but all too believable) everyday racism as experienced across age, gender, and appearance will have you gasping with shock and laughter in turn. Validating for anyone who has first-hand experience, and revealing for anyone who doesnt, Amber and Laceys next book helps us all find the absurdity in the pervasive frustrations of racism. Illuminating and packed with love and laughter, this is a must-read for just about everyone.

I think I loved this more than the first. Probably because I read the other in print and listened to the audio this time around. Hearing both Lacey and Amber tell their stories (and sing their songs) felt like they were in the room with me just talkin. 4 out of 5 stars because it could use some editing and feels more like recorded conversations than a book, but the content is hilarious, sad, infuriating, and most of all IM👏🏾POR👏🏾TANT👏🏾

TieDyeDude I had the opposite experience. I listened to the first on audio and read this. It definitely read like a transcribed conversation; not ideal. I'd like to give it another go on audio sometime, though. 3mo

This is so freaking funny. But maybe not quite as funny as the first one. Definitely do the audio.

It‘s weird to say I laughed through most of this book, but the audio version is so funny! A great way to talk about racism, privilege, & personal space. Now I need to listen to their first book.
I needed the laughter this week as my dad‘s been in the hospital, & we‘ve gotten bad news that he will most likely need a nursing home instead of returning home.

Smrloomis Sending you good thoughts as you navigate the next steps with your father. That can‘t be easy for him or you. Glad you got to laugh some! 11mo

So good. Definitely go for the audio if you've got the option! Get angry, laugh your ass off, and check your privilege.

This - like its predecessor book - is worth the price of admission for the audiobook version. This volume is a bit heavier in terms of what happens - one story in particular was quite upsetting (beyond the fact that any story about racism is upsetting - you get what I‘m saying) - but Amber & Lacey are such sunshine delights.

I listened to YOU‘L NEVER BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENED TO LACY earlier this year and enjoyed it. This follow up is more of the same, but they‘ve widened the net for their sources. This book includes stories from family friends and will have you simultaneously laughing and gasping.

This book (and the previous one) are audiobook musts. It‘s hard to say that I liked a book about racism, but I really enjoy the way the authors tell these stories, and their banter on the audio shouldn‘t be missed.

Just not into this one. I really liked the first book, but this seems so much looser, and not in a good way. Maybe I'm misremembering, but this has a lot more irrelevant asides and interjections. The superlative format seems forced. It feels so scatter-shot that it is really hard to get into. (Also, seems a little racist that of all the places to put the sticker, they cover Amber's face...)

“Now, what is a racist? Is it just a confused person who means well but blah, blah, blah? No. A racist is a turd.”

😂 This was great. If you were a fan of their first book, as I was, you‘ll definitely want to check this out!

Yeah, Amber and Lacey are awesome! From the outset, they warn you that this is a more serious book with some very troubling racist stories, but they also have some lighter times. A little sugar with your medicine. Plus their audiobook narration adds so much! In this collection, they draw upon racist macro- and micro-aggressions that have happened to their friends and family that and out faux Guinness awards in various categories.

TrishB This is really expensive here so I‘m going to wait for an offer! 2y
vlwelser Did you listen to their first book. I thought it was hilarious. The Disney princess singing was next level. 2y

Sisters Amber and Lacey are back with still more racist stories. They are able to make you laugh even while wanting to scream at the people who subjected them and their love ones to the incidents described. Audio is the way to go because listening them crack each other up is enough to get me giggling.

This book is a timely read, eye opening and horrifying yet humorous. It jumps around between storytellers which broke up the flow a bit but I like how the sisters approached this serious topic with their signature humor. Fellow white people, read this. We have progressed as a society in many way but still have much work to do when it comes to racism and the treatment of BIPOC people. #bookreview #bookstagram
