Another Heartland List book for middle grade readers, and I enjoyed it. Told from the POV of Res, a rover built to go to Mars, and Sophie, whose mom worked to build and code Res. Res has thoughts and feelings, despite being programmed as a robot. Beeps and boops. Sophie writes letters to Res, a cathartic way for her to handle her feelings and we get to watch her grow up through her letters. Book #79 in 2024

Nebklvr I loved this book. 3mo

As an adult, A Rover‘s Story takes a bit more willing disbelief, but for its middle grade target audience, it‘s an almost perfect novel.

Warga deftly blends fact and fiction, education and entertainment, while finding a way to get our little rover‘s story told.

Bonus points for Warga‘s ability to disregard conventional tropes to make an original story with a lot of heart without pandering or being cloying.

3/5 ⭐️s
A Rover's Story examines what it means to be alive. Res, our main character, is a Mars Rover. He experiences a very wide range of human emotions and experiences, but cannot communicate with humans (other than through code). Throughout his life, the author depicts the scientific journey of building a robot for space and the process of space exploration. I was shocked at how emotional a darn robot made me!

@Jenken1998 your review made me want to watch Short Circuit again. I also found the sequel that I don't think I'd ever seen before. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. This was such a cute story! I'm looking forward to the YouTube discussion hosted on Books and Jams channel.

The group read for #middlegrademarch over on YouTube. Hosted by A Curley Reader and Books and Jams. This was fantastic. It is a sweet story about a Mars rover that develops human feelings. Loved all the science info as well as riding along with a character that must identify his feelings aa he experiences them. Have to admit. I teared up a couple of times. Made me nostalgic for the movie Short Circuit 🥰

sblbooks I can't wait to read it! I thought about short circuit too, I'm going to try to find a copy to watch. 2y
Clwojick I 100% tested up when I read it! So good! 2y
