The New York Times bestselling author of The Last Romantics delivers a wise, timely, big-hearted novel of unplanned isolation and newly forged community.Where does one go, you might ask, when the world falls apart? When the immutable facts of your life--the mundane, the trivial, the take-for-granted minutiae that once filled every second of every day--suddenly disappear? Where does one go in such dire and unexpected circumstances?I went home, of course. MURBRIDGE COMMUNITY MESSAGE BOARDFREE: 500 cans of corn. Accidentally ordered them online. I really hate corn. Happy to help load.REMINDER: use your own goddamn garbage can for your own goddamn pet waste. I'm looking at you Peter Luflin.REMINDER: monthly Select Board meeting this Friday. Agenda items: 1) sludge removal; 2) upkeep of chime tower; 3) ice rink monitor thank you gift. Questions? Contact Hildegard Hyman, HHMurbridge@gmail.comDarcy Clipper, prodigal daughter, nearly thirty, has returned home to Murbridge, Massachusetts, after her life takes an unwelcome left turn. Murbridge, Darcy is convinced, will welcome her home and provide a safe space in which she can nurse her wounds and harbor grudges, both real and imagined. But Murbridge, like so much else Darcy thought to be fixed and immutable, has changed. And while Darcy's first instinct might be to hole herself up in her childhood bedroom, subsisting on Chef Boy-R-Dee and canned chickpeas, it is human nature to do two things: seek out meaningful human connection and respond to anonymous internet postings. As Murbridge begins to take shape around Darcy, both online and in person, Darcy will consider the most fundamental of American questions: What can she ask of her community? And what does she owe it in return?

About to turn 30, Darcy‘s life has imploded. She returns to her small hometown in Massachusetts to isolate and lick her wounds. Initially she decides that humanity is awful and she wants nothing to do with anyone. But she slowly but surely finds her way back into community and friendship with several colorful and engaging residents of the town. This is a funny, quirky, odd little book that goes from weird to charming to inspiring. I just loved it.

Right book, right time. I needed something fun, light, and maybe just a bit ridiculous to shake off Booker darkness and In Memoriam melancholy, and this fit the bill!

This was sweet and enjoyable if not predictable. I loved the inclusion of the online community board forum to help propel the book forward. Outstanding narration by Kristen Sieh. And the cover works SO WELL for #ISpyBingo @TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick 😄

This was a fun read!

Tara Conklin delivers excellent satire about the people and events that take place in a middle-class suburb.

I enjoyed the way the online message board was incorporated into the story.

Charming and hilarious, and just a good read.

If there‘s something that I love to read, it‘s a societal critique that really sees who people are. Conklin does that here in a hilarious fashion, skewering the ridiculousness that can be a middle class suburb. I absolutely loved this!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Quality satire with a “Nextdoor”-type online message board serving as the vehicle of story connection. This was very fun, thoughtful, and relatable. Satire, when done well, is extra funny because it cleverly pokes fun at the absurdity of real life. This was a nice change of pace from what I‘ve been reading lately.

monalyisha Oh, I‘m happy for you that it was a win! Always better to enjoy what you‘re reading than not. 😅 2y

Mehso-so

I was so excited to finish my last nonfiction book so I could jump in and start this novel, which waited tantalizingly for me on my shelf. As soon as I started, though, I knew it might not be for me. More times than not, Darcy felt like a bad Millennial stereotype. As a Millennial myself, I took offense (which we‘re known to do 😅). In fact, none of the characters felt *real.* 👇🏻

monalyisha 1/1: Still, I liked the way everything came together (the Mushroom Festival, the “tulip lady”, the drone). And I found Conklin‘s wry observations amusing. It just felt like the story and the writing were more suited to a quirky, heartwarming comedy film, a la Garden State, than a novel. 2y
RamsFan1963 I almost bought this at the bookstore today, but I was pretty sure I couldn't relate to the MC, being a Boomer myself. 2y
monalyisha @RamsFan1963 Probably a good call! 2y

JamieArc Okay, but I can‘t bypass a book with a mushroom festival, so I‘ll certainly be reading this 😂 2y
monalyisha @JamieArc Ha! I‘d love to read your thoughts on it. It‘s possible I was just in a ~mood.~ 2y

“Don‘t get discouraged, Darcy. Just keep on trucking.”

“Trucking? Is that really the verb that best describes the act of moving through your days, trying to find meaning and connection with the world around you?”

DrexEdit Maybe it's meant to be a post-1970s ironic use of that phrase? 2y

Loved this story. It was a dramedy. Funny and interesting as I followed the descent into isolation of a woman scorned and then her coming out to the world again. Entertaining lighthearted and just what I needed.

This is really a sweet if at times a little sloggy story about realizing your life isn't exactly what you'd thought it to be and challenges the concept of returning home after said life gets a wee bit...messy. Darcy is a character I think most will connect with. This book comes out in March and is worth seeking out.
