I really liked this one. It is a British police procedural with the added twist of the woman in charge (Kat) being told she has to work with and evaluate an AI assistant (Lock). They are supposed to be working cold cases, but when they get a lead the case becomes active. Her reluctance to use the AI & it's eerie human like presence add both interest and humour. I was happy to see that there is a sequel. Thanks to NetGalley for the digital ARC. 5/5
I was so pleasantly surprised by this book. The premise didn't seem like one I was going to like this much. Now I can't wait for the next book. This one is so good. Jo Callaghan's debut novel is a winner.
Please read the heartfelt Acknowledgments at the ending. Parts sure made me cry. I'm so sorry for her loss. So so sorry.

The Warwickshire police has agreed on a pilot project. An AI detective is joining a small team to review some cases of missing people. The DCI is against AI. The professor behind the AI would love to replace all human police officers with AI. So, who's the better detective, the human with 25 years of experience on the job, or the AI with the titular "In the Blink of an Eye" access to data?
Listened to it in one sitting. ⬇️
First in new series
I‘ve been on the fence about this, but the author is at the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival in July and I‘m trying to read as many authors as I can before I go.
It was the AI Detective in this that was putting me off, and to start with it made the book feel quite YA, with it being a hologram. After a while though, the twisty storyline overtook that element, and the AI became less ‘obvious‘.
There is a sequel, which I now think I‘ll read.
It‘s taken me ages to read this as AI is something discussed EVERY day in work and I didn‘t know if I wanted to read fiction about it!
However- I really enjoyed it, liked the concept and the characters- will definitely give the 2nd one a read. I‘m also a sucker for new female, flawed detectives.
I really enjoyed this. Everything you want from a thriller: interesting murder plot, depressed yet brilliant detective, fast paced but then there‘s a little splash of sci-fi with an AI assistant also on the case. 😯 So much fun! Loved it. 👍
This was an intriguing take on the usual crime fiction fare, using technology not too far off from what we have now which kept it believable. Locke was an amusing blend of naivety, misplaced confidence, & cold logic. The author does a good job of slowly humanising the AI character whilst having Kat continually point out that Locke isn't human. It brings up some intriguing questions about the use of AI. (Continued)
