Magician's Daughter
Magician's Daughter | H G Parry
19 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
"That most rare and precious thing: a brand-new classic, both wholly original and wonderfully nostalgic." --Alix E. Harrow, New York Times bestselling author In the early 1900s, a young woman is caught between two worlds in H. G. Parry's spellbinding tale of miracles, magic, and the adventure of a lifetime. Off the coast of Ireland sits a legendary island hidden by magic. A place of ruins and ancient trees, sea salt air, and fairy lore, Hy-Brasil is the only home Biddy has ever known. Washed up on its shore as a baby, Biddy lives a quiet life with her guardian, the mercurial magician Rowan. A life she finds increasingly stifling. One night, Rowan fails to return from his mysterious travels. To find him, Biddy must venture into the outside world for the first time. But Rowan has powerful enemies--forces who have hoarded the world's magic and have set their sights on the magician's many secrets. Biddy may be the key to stopping them. Yet the closer she gets to answers, the more she questions everything she's ever believed about Rowan, her past, and the nature of magic itself. Praise for The Magician's Daughter "Brilliantly imagined. Parry blends mythic elements with wit and heart." --Lucy Holland "A compelling journey into a world of fading myth and mystery. The old magic runs deep in Parry's veins." --Cameron Johnston For more from H. G. I get a couple of uninterrupted reading hours this morning at my favorite coffee shop while my son is at jazz camp. It‘s a beautiful day outside, the coffee is delicious and this book is starting off wonderfully.

So you‘ve heard of Hy-Brasil? That mystical isle off the west coast of Ireland? 16 (or maybe 17) year old Bridget has grown up there with only 2 mages for company.

humouress She‘s only known 2 people all her life on the isle and she knew there was a lot they didn‘t tell her about the outside world. Now she is outside, learning more and presented with other‘s views of their past actions - does she/ do we still trust them? 4mo
humouress Ch 14/23 I love the way that Hutch (Rowan‘s rabbit familiar) still has rabbit mannerisms when he‘s human 4mo
humouress Ch 12/23: She‘s only ever known 2 people all her life on the isle and she knows there‘s a lot they didn‘t tell her about the outside world but now she is outside she‘s given different views of them and their actions. So does she/ do we trust them now? 4mo

This was a delightful original YA fantasy with no romance. About a teenage orphan who was taken in by a magician as a baby. The magician is trying to bring magic back into the world. This has a very unique world and magic system. It is also a standalone, which is a rarity. Though not highly complex, it was a fun read. 4⭐️

Is historical magic a thing? If so this book set in 1912 is it - the period details were great, the magic was well described and mostly made sense and the story was really about families and growing up, about power and control. Lots packed in and I really enjoyed it (reading in the sunshine helped)

#Aardvark pick for March. I was between this and Big Swiss, but I already have that on my library wish list.

@AardvarkBookClub

TheBookHippie I am still struggling 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 same two. 2y
vlwelser @TheBookHippie how odd that you and I are on the same page. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser my library will never carry LGBTQIA like that so probs will make my decision or I‘ll get both if my daughter wants either and I can read it and put it in her jólabókaflóðið box ?… bahaha 2y
vlwelser @TheBookHippie You're planning presents for Dec already. Not even surprised. 2y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser you know my menu for supper is planned for the year right ? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 It always coming in handy -being a planner of some things anyway. My daughter screen shots it shows up on days she likes the food… 🤣 2y

I would just like to (humbly) say that ALL of my #Aardvark clue-based predictions were on the money!

Breanne1 I was so impressed when I saw the drop and you were spot on!!! Woo hoo! I feel like they need to make you an official spokesperson 😀 2y
Hooked_on_books I was impressed at your 5 for 5 record this month, though I was kinda hoping you were wrong, as I‘m not super excited by these choices. 2y

Ok so #Aardvark initially said they weren't going to do fantasy, but this one fits the clues so well that I'm gonna roll the dice and say this is my prediction for this clue. Time will tell! 🐇

Megabooks We‘ll know tonight!! 😁😁 2y
