In this dark and seductive YA fantasy debut, a siren must choose between protecting her family and following her heart in a prejudiced kingdom where her existence is illegal. Saoirse Sorkova survives on lies. As a soldier-in-training at the most prestigious barracks in the kingdom, she lies about being a siren to avoid execution. At night, working as an assassin for a dangerous group of mercenaries, Saoirse lies about her true identity. And to her family, Saoirse tells the biggest lie of all: that she can control her siren powers and doesn't struggle constantly against an impulse to kill. As the top trainee in her class, Saoirse would be headed for a bright future if it weren't for the need to keep her secrets out of the spotlight. But when a mysterious blackmailer threatens her sister, Saoirse takes a dangerous job that will help her investigate: she becomes personal bodyguard to the crown prince. Saoirse should hate Prince Hayes. After all, his father is the one who enforces the kingdom's brutal creature segregation laws. But when Hayes turns out to be kind, thoughtful, and charming, Saoirse finds herself increasingly drawn to him-especially when they're forced to work together to stop a deadly killer who's plaguing the city. There's only one problem: Saoirse is that deadly killer. Featuring an all Black and Brown cast, a forbidden romance, and a compulsively dark plot full of twists, this thrilling YA fantasy is perfect for fans of A Song Below Water and To Kill a Kingdom.

(2023) It's a YA fantasy about a siren finding her way in a walled city where sirens are outlawed. Saoirse uses her magical man-killing powers as a freelance assassin, but then gets a job as the prince's bodyguard. Which gets awkward when she has to investigate a murder she herself committed. And more awkward when she falls in love. It's a little too YA for me (The angst! The super special specialness! The luuurve!) but others have loved it.

Jari-chan I really like the cover, but reading your review, I know it's not for me😅 1y
swynn Hope I didn't scare you off a book you'd enjoy, but you know your tolerance for YA and this is very. It's a good book, but for a different audience 1y

Slow start with a nonstop ending. Saorise is the last siren in a world that views her negatively for all the killings her kind has done. This alone in a world where only fae control fate. Humans and every other species are inferior, servant. The politics of this world are invigorating. Great setup for the mystery ending. Hayes is a cinnamon roll. Didn‘t care for most other characters. Including wanting these two together. Ending felt last second.

I got a couple of YA adventures for #BookSpin and #DoubleSpin this month: a recent fantasy and a science fiction story so vintage that its blurb calls it "rip-snorting." (Um, whaddya say we don't revive that expression, yeah?)

Thanks for the early release, @TheAromaofBooks !

TheAromaofBooks I do love the cover for the rip-snorting adventure 😂 1y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm I‘d probably have picked up that book entirely based on the rip-snorting blurb. 🤣😂🤣 1y
swynn @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm The blurb, the art, the whole thing just screams “Gee whiz!“ doesn't it? I love this stuff. 1y

It took me a minute to get into the book but once I hit the second half I was hooked. The ending was gripping, satisfying and left me wanting the next book desperately. My favorite character was Prince Hayes❤️❤️❤️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ overall loved it and highly recommend.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Sing Me to Sleep” was a decent read to begin with, but it definitely picked up towards the end. I initially had trouble liking some of the characters, however by the end I found myself liking them more. I look forward to reading the sequel when it comes out!

This YA fantasy novel will be out at the end of June 2023 and you'll want to make sure you keep an eye out for this one. The author has taken great care in crafting this novel/world with dark elements, romance, and plenty of action. Saoirse faces prejudice, balancing who and what she is while attempting to follow her heart. This book is truly worth reading and I wish the author great success with this one! #gabiburton #debutauthor

Chrissyreadit This is absolutely in my wheelhouse! Excited! 2y
KristiAhlers @Chrissyreadit I really think you'll love this one! Left me with a bit of a book hangover. 2y

A different take on the siren mythos involving bipoc characters in a segregated fantasy kingdom. Saoirse, a siren assassin, must battle her burgeoning abilities and her natural killer instinct as she assigned the task as a bodyguard for the prince. Romantic tension and political turmoil plague the land as internal conflicts within the palace, plots of an insurrection, and the other supernatural creatures threaten their existence in this YA.
