The One That Got Away
The One That Got Away | Melissa Pimentel

Ruby and Ethan were perfect for each other. Until the day they suddenly weren't. Ten years later, Ruby's single, having spent the last decade focusing on her demanding career and hectic life in Manhattan. There's barely time for a trip to England for her little sister's wedding. And there's certainly not time to think about seeing Ethan there for the first time in years. But as the family frantically prepare for the big day, Ruby can't help but wonder if she made the right choice all those years ago? Because there's nothing like a wedding for stirring up the past . . .

I just finished Love and Other Words (so good) and was looking for something similar.

This one does not get great reviews on GR but I think that‘s because it‘s touted as a modern retelling of Persuasion. If you are expecting that, it won‘t measure up. But I‘m 1/3 of the way in and it‘s a cute modern romance so far.

Ashley_Nicoletto Love and Other Words was so dang good. 6y

A Persuasion retelling! A loose retelling, but it's definitely in there. I liked this. It was exactly what I was hoping for: a perfect escape from reality while I read. The story of Ruby and Ethan is told in short past and present timeline chapters. The story builds steadily until we learn exactly what happened ten years ago and what will happen now.

I wasn't ready to say goodbye to these characters; I selfishly wanted more after the end.

It's good for what it needs to be, an easy read. It lacks a lot of depth and the characters really fall flat. Cover is gorg, tho.

I just started this yesterday and am already halfway through. It's suppose to be along the lines of Jane Austen's Persuasion (and I can kind of see that) but I'm enjoying it standalone. I'm digging Ruby as the mc, who is constantly reevaluating her feelings for the man who got away years ago.

An "eh" sort of read: fluffy as any rom com so yummy but also without body. Persuasion-inspired in the loosest sense, and really was a novel of a reunion, not a romance. The female characters were all friendly with each other, even when possibly romantic rivals, so hooray for that.

Today was a Monday's Monday so I'm unwinding with rose, flowers, and this Persuasion-inspired read.
