A Little Luck
A Little Luck | Claudia Pieiro
13 posts | 5 read | 19 to read
From the author of Elena Knows , finalist for the 2022 International Booker Prize 20 years after a shocking accident, Mary Lohan returns to the Buenos Aires suburb she escaped in a fugue of guilt and isolation. She is not the samenot her name or voice, not even the color of her eyes. The neighborhood looks different too, but shes still the same woman and its still the same place, and as the past erupts into view, they slowly collide. A Little Luck is the story about the debilitating weight of lies, the messy line between bravery and cowardice, and the tragedies, big and small, that can ripple out from a single decisive event. In a place she had determined to forget forever, both anticipated encounters and unanticipated revelations show her, and us, that sometimes life is neither fate nor chance: perhaps its nothing more than a little luck.

I actually read this a couple of months ago but forgot to write a review. This is the second novel I have read by Claudia Pineiro. She is a fantastic storyteller. I seem to be reading a lot of books about motherhood lately. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was good, but not as tight & well paced as Elena Knows. I think perhaps because even though this is only slightly over 200 pages, the story was drawn out enough to lose a bit of steam. With Elena Knows the tension just ratchets up until BAM Claudia hits you over the head with the end.

With this if she could have somehow continued the railroad scenes as standalone chapters, they may have propelled the story better.

So true; mature love is far more nuanced and complex than young love. ♥️ The singular is plural and the plural is singular. My husband and I were even younger.

Cortg I was 23 when I married. 25+ years we‘re still married, but marriage was much different then, and easier. 6mo

Thank you so much Barbara, this was a wonderful read. Poignant, melancholy and sad 😢 achieves a lot in 200 pages.

After 20 years Mary Lohan (her new name) returns to her homeland #Argentina. She‘s not sure how or even if she‘ll deal with her past but it‘s something she can‘t forget.

I can‘t even begin to explain why I loved this book so much. The plot even has some weak points and yet Claudia Piñeiro is such a gifted writer, her main character, the damaged Maria, such a wonderful human. It left me breathless. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Some #bookmail today. Loved Elena Knows so very excited for tagged. The White is for our October #NaturaLitsy read. I went with the Oxford University Press illustrated edition. It‘s quite lovely!

BarbaraBB Is it a new Piñeiro? 1y
Tamra Anxious for the Pineiro! I‘m savoring the anticipation, which means it sits in my bookshelf too long. 😂 1y
jlhammar @BarbaraBB Yes, I think so! Newly translated and published by Charco anyhow. Can‘t wait! 1y

I had fantastic luck in second hand book shops today! 🎉
Excited to read all of these, but especially the tagged novel (which is apropos) because I have been regularly haunted by Elena Knows. I could reread it now if only I had a copy! It‘s on my to buy list.

I wish you all could smell the Thai basil.

Tamra @jlhammar Magers & Quinn was one stop today. 😁 1y
jlhammar Magers & Quinn is awesome! Amazing haul - I want to read all of those! I have A Little Luck on its way. Very excited. 1y

Tamra @jlhammar did you “enjoy” Elena Knows? I had no idea after I closed it that I would keep thinking about the story. It was brilliantly told and reflected the paralysis of the mother. 1y
Tamra @Deblovestoread love it when that happens! 1y
jlhammar Yes, loved Elena Knows! Read it with my IRL book club last summer and we had such a great discussion. 1y
Cathythoughts You did have fantastic luck 👍🏻🎉. I loved History of the Rain. Look forward to your thoughts on tagged book. Elena was so good. 1y
batsy What lovely finds! Those Viragos! And I really want to read The Birthday Party. Also got my eye on the new Pineiro; Elena Knows was unforgettable. 1y
squirrelbrain Great haul! 1y
LeahBergen Lovely old green Viragos! 1y
