True Stories
True Stories: Selected Non-Fiction | Helen Garner
19 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
Winner of the 1997 Kibble Award for Literature, True Stories spans twenty-five years of work by one of Australia's great writers. In this extraordinary collection of non-fiction stories, Helen Garner visits the morgue and goes cruising on a Russian ship. She watches women giving birth and gets the sack for teaching her students about sex. She attends a school dance and a gun show. She writes about dreaming, about turning fifty and about the storm caused by her book The First Stone. Her story on the murder of the two-year-old Daniel Valerio wins her a Walkley Award. Garner looks at the world with a shrewd and sympathetic eye. Her non-fiction, with its many voices, is passionate and compelling. 'Helen Garner writes the best sentences in Australia.' Bulletin

On Saturday the sun was shining (unlike now with dangerous, cold wind!) and I headed to the Botanic Garden‘s book fair. I exercised restraint with the books but the cds were free so I couldn‘t help myself. Mainly classical music. Some of the book covers are gorgeous and all in great condition. A bargain as they were mostly $2 each. I enjoyed a Devonshire tea afterwards. I will definitely be back.

Suet624 Fantastic!! 2y
CarolynM Great haul! I know they are positively antiquated now, but I prefer my music on CD rather than downloads (or Spotify) 2y

Not sure if this counts toward a #Scarathlon point, however, “Horror Movies: Cursed or Coincidence?” is great. I had to immediately order one of Leslie Warren‘s books as a result 📖

#QuotsyJune18 #Diary

Helen Garner is writing here about her first novel Monkey Grip, which was based on her diaries.

She has been criticised over the years for blurring fact and fiction.

There is no one else quite like her in the Australian writing scene. #fangirl 😍🇦🇺📚❤️

Garner, on reading and forgetting.
😂👌🙌 📚😊🤓📚

Chelleo That is so me! 7y
Jeg Thank you @MrsMalaprop . I‘m feeling so much better about my forgetting. Though it does drive me crazy sometimes especially around book club time. 😊. Hope you are relaxing, looks good down there. 7y
CarolynM That's what I love about Helen Garner, she is not afraid to tell it exactly as she sees it and never pretends to be anything other than what she is. Which other literary figure would have even hinted at sentiments like that? 7y
MrsMalaprop @CarolynM Yep, she is very real. 7y

#QuotsyMarch18 #Moonlight

I am away for a long weekend with my family and am ploughing my way through this tome, the collected short non-fiction of one of my writing heroes, Helen Garner.

I think that if I tried hard enough I could do every photo challenge, every day from this book alone. There is so much in here and I‘m loving it.

📚😎☀️👍

P.S. And this 2017 publication has STILL not been added to the @Litsy database 😏.

emilyhaldi Wow, nonfiction short stories... I'm intrigued! Going to check this one out 👍🏻 7y
MrsMalaprop @emilyhaldi The tagged book is actually an older, smaller volume of her short non fiction, because the 2017 collection I‘m reading is not on the database yet. Garner has a huge body of short non fiction such as 7y
emilyhaldi I see, thanks for the tip! I am definitely going to check out her writing 😄😄 7y

#Riotgrams #Oversizedbook
This #oversized #currentread is not yet on the Litsy database. I asked for it to be added a couple of weeks ago. It was released for Garner‘s 75th birthday in 2017. #Yearofthechunkster
The tagged book is actually an older selection of her short non-fiction.
(Sorry I keep going on about Garner; I‘ve got a bit of fangirl going on 😍).

AceOnRoam 75 yo? Wow, when did that happen !! 7y
MrsMalaprop @AceOnRoam I know right? When I saw her walk on stage last night I thought I must‘ve got it wrong because she looked so young & sprightly. But then at one point she said she doesn‘t ‘do‘ social media & figures that, at 75, it‘s passed her by. 7y
AceOnRoam Yeah well she hasn't tried Litsy yet maybe? She does look terrific for 75. 7y

minkyb I wonder if there is a correlation between chunkster reading and increased sales of wrist braces? occurrence of carpal tunnel ? broken toes from tripping over said chunkster? @Cinfhen 🤔🤕😜😂🤪 7y
Cinfhen I always say...you get what you pay for @minkyb 😁 7y
MrsMalaprop @Cinfhen @minkyb 🤔 Well I have had carpal tunnel surgery & I do read my fair share of chunksters, so you could be onto something 🤣. 7y
minkyb Ouch! Sorry to poke fun at a real condition you had to deal with. 🙄 7y

#QuotsyFeb2018 #Always

Garner is writing about being the eldest of 5 sisters. She finds it hard to fathom that her younger siblings weren‘t #always there, that there was a time when it was just her & her parents. At the same time she was #always looking forward.

Makes me wonder whether my eldest sister (of 5 siblings) feels the same 🤔. I think she would.

My sister has said of her childhood, “the babies just kept coming!” 😅

From a short non-fiction piece by Helen Garner, when she was an English teacher in Melbourne in the 1960s.

Go girls 👊👊 ❤️

Cinfhen Nice 🙌🏻 7y
batsy Wow. Truly astounding... And I wonder how far we've come in terms of internalised beliefs. I've long meant to read Garner, especially this 7y
MrsMalaprop @batsy I have read most of Garner‘s work & am seeing her live next weekend 👏😍. The First Stone was one of our book club‘s first reads 20 years ago. Are you aware 2 collections of her short work (one fiction & the other non) were released in 2017 to celebrate her 75th birthday? ❤️❤️❤️ 7y
batsy No, I didn't! That's amazing. You must be thrilled to see her next weekend 💙 7y

Trigger warning: infanticide, murder.

The opening piece in this new collection of non-fiction is about the devastating 2015 case of a mother driving her 4 youngest children into a lake, on purpose.

“While men kill to control or punish their children or partner, women kill children because they cannot cope with the extreme difficulties that they encounter in trying to care for their children.”

(2017 publication, not yet in Litsy database)

I love finding little things like this!

readordierachel Great find! 7y
MrsMalaprop Fabulous. I've just started reading this today. Although the tagged book is not this book. There is a 1997 publication & that's the one logged on Litsy. Just emailed Litsy to add this 2017 True Stories to the database. 7y

This is far from Garner's usual exquisitely simple and brilliant writing but it is an interesting look at the development of a writer and some of the stories offered glimpses at the brilliance that would come in their acerbic observations of life, death and the in between.

cathysaid The blurb sounds really interesting! 7y

My company in the 40mins between work finishing and school pick up that I have to get the house clean. I adore Helen Garner's writing and the narration of her own work in her broad Australian accent makes the audio even better.

Hoopiefoot Welcome! Montani Semper Liberi! 7y
saguarosally Are there any special celebrations for West Virginia day? 7y
Blaire @Hoopiefoot thanks! 7y
Blaire @saguarosally a couple years on the back there were huge celebrations for the sesquicentennial. Wv was formed in the middle of the civil war splitting off from Virginia as a free state, so there's a state holiday every year on its birthday. I'm not a native West Virginian but I've come to see why people feel so fiercely about the state. In charleston its festivall - 2 weeks of focus on the arts - so there's a lot of great plays, music, etc. 7y
