The Hidden Language of Cats
The Hidden Language of Cats: How They Have Us at Meow | Sarah Brown, PhD
5 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
Descended from shy, solitary North African wild cats, domestic cats set up homes with devoted owners all over the world by learning how to talk to us. This book translatesin case you missed anything. A renowned cat behavior scientist of over thirty years, Dr. Sarah Brown has been at the forefront of research in the field, discovering how cats use tail signals to interact with each other and their owners. Now, she reveals the previously unexplored secrets of cat communication in a book that is both scientifically grounded and utterly delightful. Each chapter dives into a different form of communication, including vocalizations, tail signals, scents, rubbing, and ear movements. The iconic meow, for example, is rarely used between adult catscleverly mimicking the cries of a human infant, the meow is a feline invention for conversing with people. Through observing the behavior of two cat colonies in rural England, readers will also have the opportunity to glimpse into the lives of some of the cats behind Dr. Brown's science. Can we understand what cats meows and other signals mean? How do cats actually perceive us? And how can we use this information to inform how we talk back to our feline friends? Referencing historical records, exploring modern scientific studies of cat-human communication, and including simple, elegant line drawings, The Hidden Language of Cats is perfect for any cat lover who wants to learn more about their companion.

“Greetings, Human. We need to talk. The food machine in the kitchen does not appear to be dispensing an adequate amount of food. I request a recalibration and an increase in my daily allotment. Please resolve this issue immediately or I will be forced to escalate the situation and impose punitive measures that may include loudly vomiting on your rug at 3 am. I trust that we understand each other. Have a good day.”

Tamra Can you imagine if cats unionized?! 😼 12mo
Amiable @Tamra Ha ha! I‘d say they already probably have and they communicate telepathically. 😄 12mo

ravenlee To be completely frank, the loud vomiting may happen regardless of any action or inaction on your part. But be assured that if you refuse to acquiesce, any vomiting that occurs WILL be punitive. 12mo
Ruthiella 😹😹😹 Also, it is punitive vomiting, because WHY THE RUG? I have wood floors too. 9/10 times, he runs to the rug first. So many surfaces for easy cleaning and yet…. (edited) 12mo
Tamra @Ruthiella exactly - same with my cat & dogs! Why???!! 12mo
Amiable @ravenlee @Ruthiella @Tamra YES! My area rug covers like 2.5 percent of the floors—why must she constantly puke THERE?? (edited) 12mo

Amiable @dabbe Once you understand and accept the fact that it‘s the Cat‘s World and we all just exist in it to do his/her bidding, you become fluent in kitty language. 😀 (edited) 12mo
dabbe @Amiable We feel the same way about our GSDs. They rule the house. When we had a trainer (we couldn't walk them without reining them in somewhat), she asked my husband, “What do you do if Pip is in your spot on the couch?“ His answer: “I move to a different spot.“ Yep. They run our lives. 😃 12mo

Perfect for #Caturday, Brown looks at how house cats communicate with each other and us. She draws on her PhD research looking at a feral colony and her own experience as a cat owner. Behavior info was really weak at my vet school, and I‘ve never lived with a cat (I‘m allergic), so this was fascinating. Definitely an enjoyable read for cat lovers!
