The Fox & Little Tanuki, Volume 1
The Fox & Little Tanuki, Volume 1 | Tagawa Mi
6 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
It is said that there are some special animals occasionally born with great powers. Senzou the black fox is one of those... but instead of using his powers for good, he abused his strength until the Sun Goddess imprisoned him for his bad behavior. Three hundred years later, he's finally been released, but only on one condition he can't have any of his abilities back until he successfully helps a tanuki cub named Manpachi become an assistant to the gods. Unfortunately for Senzou, there's no cheating when it comes to completing his task! The magic beads around his neck make sure he can't wander too far from his charge or ignore his duties, and so... Senzou the once-great Fox Spirit must figure out how to be an actually-great babysitter to an innocent little tanuki or risk being stuck without his powers forever!

Let‘s see if I can explain. In Japanese folklore foxes come in 2 variants. The white fox is a helper; the black fox is a trickster of dubious morals.

The tanuki is neither a raccoon nor dog but a *raccoon dog*. Picture posted above is a tanuki. Family name is Nyctereutes & only two variants survive: common raccoon dog & Japanese raccoon dog.

Are more closely related to raccoons & of nondog behavior: they hibernate & climb trees.

Adorable!

Jari-chan Oh, I didn't know that they hibernate. Thanks for sharing! 1w

This is a cute middle grade Japanese folk based tale about fox who is forced into caring for an orphan tanuki. It is quite repetitive through each chapter of the volume, but that might be the norm for this younger age range. Cute, though not interesting enough for me to continue. 3.5⭐️

#mangamarch - kodomomuke (middle grade) manga
Also first #bookspinbingo with this one!

A villainous fox is stripped of his powers and commanded by Amatarasu to guide a young orphaned tanuki in helping gods and spirits. Very cute! I probably will leave the other volumes to the target age group, but I love the concept and this is a fun way to explore Japanese folklore and myrholpgy if you're not familiar with it. #Manga #Tanuki #Mythology

Cuteness alert! The goddess of the sun gives an evil fox spirit the chance to redeem himself by taking a baby tanuki into his care. The tanuki has mega powers he doesn‘t yet know how to control, but can he melt the fox‘s bitter heart? Volume 1 in this #manga series is suitable for all ages. Between each chapter is an informative panel about supernatural creatures in #Japanese mythology. #comics #translation #allages #kidlit #graphicnovel

Reiken (Spirit Dogs)
They are great at chasing down evil bakemono and sometimes mix with the wolves. There are times when they become attached to a person. If that person returns their affection, they will be greatly blessed.
