Don't Want You Like a Best Friend
Don't Want You Like a Best Friend: A Novel | Emma R. Alban
6 posts | 4 read | 1 to read
A swoon-worthy debut queer Victorian romance in which two debutantes distract themselves from having to seek husbands by setting up their widowed parents, and instead find their perfect match in each otherthe lesbian Bridgerton/Parent Trap you never knew you needed! Gwen has a brilliant beyond brilliant idea. Its 1857, and anxious debutante Beth has just one season to snag a wealthy husband, or she and her mother will be out on the street. But playing the blushing ingenue makes Beths skin crawl and shed rather be anywhere but here. Gwen, on the other hand, is on her fourth season and counting, with absolutely no intention of finding a husband, possibly ever. She figures she has plenty of security as the only daughter of a rakish earl, from whom shes gotten all her flair, fun, and less-than-proper party games. Lets get them together, she says. It doesnt take long for Gwen to hatch her latest scheme: rather than surrender Beth to courtship, they should set up Gwens father and Beths newly widowed mother. Let them get married instead. Itll be easy she says. Theres justone, teeny, tiny problem. Their parents kind of seem to hate each other. But no worries. Beth and Gwen are more than up to the challenge of a little twenty-year-old heartbreak. How hard can parent-trapping widowed ex-lovers be? Of course, just as their plan begins to unfold, a handsome, wealthy viscount starts calling on Beth, offering up the perfect, secure marriage. Beths not mature enough for this Now Gwen must face the prospect of sharing Beth with someone else, forever. And Beth must reckon with the fact that shes caught feelings, hard, and theyre definitely not for her potential fianc. Thats the trouble with matchmaking: sometimes you accidentally fall in love with your best friend in the process.

My stack of library books I haven‘t even started yet got waaaaay too tall during my slow reading week. Gonna try to knock it down over the next few days.

Also, I finished my tiny detective‘s office and it now lives beside my library stack. This brings me joy.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Love the tiny detectives office! Was it very fiddly to put together? 20h
xicanti @thegirlwiththelibrarybag it took a long time to assemble all the little books and file folders, which required lots of cutting and gluing, but it came together pretty easily overall. 20h
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @xicanti, and the end result is very pleasing! Enjoy your reading! 20h
SpeculativeFemale Ooo, I've been wanting to get my hands on a copy of Witch King for a while now! 20h
xicanti @SpeculativeFemale it‘s been on my library list since its Hugo nomination. @peanutnine ‘s #AuldLangSpine list gave me the push to finally borrow it. 20h

Beth has one season to find a good match or she and her widowed mother will be destitute. Gwen is on her 4th season and is in no rush to wed.
When the two girls become friends, they decide to try to get their parents together and they‘re not going to let a little thing as the mutual hatred stop them. They just weren‘t counting on falling for each other.

I loved this debut novel, releasing tomorrow, from Emma R. Alban! Charming and sweet, this sapphic historical was filled with great characters you loved rooting for, the right touch of politics and intrigue, and was a compelled joy to read! I can‘t wait to read more from Alban! #BookspinBingo #netgalleygroup @TheAromaofBooks @AllDebooks
