The Burning
The Burning: A Novel | Linda Castillo
4 posts | 3 read
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder investigates a gruesome murder that reveals a little-known chapter of early Amish history in this next riveting installment of the bestselling series by Linda Castillo. Newlywed Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is awakened by an urgent midnight call summoning her to a suspicious fire in the woods. When she arrives at the scene, she discovers a charred body. According to the coroner, the deceased, an Amish man named Milan Swanz, was chained to a stake and burned alive. It is an appalling and eerily symbolic crime against an upstanding husband and father. Kate knows all too well that the Amish prefer to handle their problems without interference from the outside world, and no one will speak about the murdered man. From what shes able to piece together, Swanz led a deeply troubled life and had recently been excommunicated. But if thats the case, why are the Amish so reluctant to talk about him? Are they protecting the memory of one of their own? Or are they afraid of something they dare not share? When her own brother is implicated in the case, Kate finds herself not only at odds with the Amish, the world of which she was once a part, but also the English community and her counterparts in law enforcement. The investigation takes a violent turn when Kates life is threatened by a mysterious stranger. To uncover the truth about the death of Milan Swanz, Kate must dive deep into the Anabaptist culture, peering into all the dark corners of its history, only to uncover a secret legacy that shatters everything she thought she knew about the Amish themselvesand her own roots.

I read this a week ago
An Amish man tied to a stake and burning is a case no one in Painter's Mill ever expected to be in their area. Chief Kate Burkholder is puzzled by this crime, especially since she grew up Amish. When she starts investigating.she ends up with more questions than answers.

I enjoy this series. Castillo has developed all the characters so well. I always feel like I am visiting old friends when I read a new book by her. ⬇️

Monica5 She grabs the reader at the first pages and doesn't let go until the end. I always fly through the Kate Burkholder books. Kate is a complicated person that has dealt with a lot of things throughout this series, but still survives. The Kate Burkholder is a suspense series that always has a little clean romance sprinkled throughout.

If you enjoy suspense, thrillers, or police procedurals and haven't read this series, you should give it a try. It can be read as a standalone, but I think you would enjoy them all.

Tentative Publishing Date July 9, 2024

In the 16 books of the #KateBurkholderSeries, this marks my first time listening on audio! And just like the physical books, I couldn‘t tear myself away. The fiery and horrifying murder of Milan Swanz lies at the center of this plot. The more Kate learns about him, the more people seem to have a motive for his murder. When the case turns personal, once more she‘s thrust into danger. Fast-paced but the ending wasn‘t as satisfying as I expected!

FULL REVIEW WILL BE ON JULY 11.

An ex-communicated Amish man burned alive?

How horrific could that be and why?

Milan Swanz was a troublemaker, but didn‘t deserve to die that way. Who could do something like that?

We follow Kate Burkholder and the team in another intense, descriptive, keep-your-interest book that gives the reader a lot of information about Amish life.

Fans won‘t want to miss Linda Castillo‘s newest.
