From the award-winning author of the Cash Blackbear series comes a compelling novel of a Native American woman who learns of the disappearance of one of her own and decides enough is enough. All they heard was her scream. Quill has lived on the Red Pine reservation in Minnesota her whole life. She knows what happens to women who look like her. Just a girl when Jimmy Sky jumped off the railway bridge and she ran for help, Quill realizes now that she's never stopped running. As she trains for the Boston Marathon early one morning out in the woods, she hears a scream. When she returns to search the area, all she finds are tire tracks and a single beaded earring. Things are different now for Quill than when she was a lonely girl. Her friends Punk and Gaylyn are two women who don't know what it means to quit; her loving husband, Crow, and their two beautiful children challenge her to be better every day. So when she hears a second woman has been stolen, she is determined to do something about it--starting with investigating the group of men working the pipeline construction just north of their homes. As Quill closes in on the truth about the missing women, someone else disappears. In her quest to find justice for all of the women of the reservation, she is confronted with the hard truths of their home and the people who purport to serve them. When will she stop losing neighbors, friends, family? As Quill puts everything on the line to make a difference, the novel asks searing questions about bystander culture, the reverberations of even one act of crime, and the long-lasting trauma of being considered invisible.

Quill has always lived in the rez in northern Minnesota and is all too aware of the epidemic of Native women going missing when she hears a woman scream when she‘s out on a run. From there the book focuses in on her realities, the issues with the local tribal police, and the feeling amongst the women that they have to protect themselves and each other, as no one else will. A searing read.

CaitlinR Thanks for the great review. Looking forward to this read. 9h

“How the hell did we survive this long? she asked herself. How did our ancestors survive the broken hearts of children gone? Parents murdered? We have lived with losing loved ones for century after century. And we still have babies and keep loving. This love will break my heart.” This book is suspenseful, heartbreaking, and powerful. A story about #MMIW and the bystander effect. “It is a present-day, on-the-edge-of-trauma reality.”

Marcie Rendon is one of my favorite authors. This is a standalone novel. Quill is fierce and determined and independent and her husband Crow has to come to terms with her nature. There is trauma, mystery, violence to indigenous women, love, loyalty. This is an excellent read. Be sure to read the Author‘s Note. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

While training for a marathon, Quill hears a woman scream in the woods. When she investigates, she finds one beaded earring. Thus begins her search for young native women who have disappeared recently. Quill is fierce and self-reliant and fears the police or feds will be ineffective as usual. Rendon keeps the reader engaged with her rich characters and gripping action.

Quill, training for the Boston Marathon, is out running when she hears a woman scream. This is the catalyst to lead her on an investigation into the violence and kidnapping of women and girls in her community, touching on the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women in North America. Quill and her friends Punk and Gaylyn are well realized, empathetic characters - fully fleshed women with all their vulnerabilities, love, and rage.

cont'd

TheKidUpstairs It was an engaging story, but the book itself had a few editing issues that occasionally took me out of the telling(the story of how Quill and her friends became runners was told twice, but it was different each time; there were some weird repetitions of introductions; and one chapter with horribly expositional dialogue). The strength of the rest made these issues minor annoyances, rather than fully detracting from the experience. cont'd 1mo
TheKidUpstairs Ultimately, the characters were the biggest strength. They felt so genuine that, as a reader, I wanted to stick with them until the end. 1mo

Great newly released thriller that focuses on the dangers Indigenous women face. Rendon gives a voice to social injustices while also creating a compelling suspense mixed with heartfelt characters that feel authentic.

It's a bit dark, with a quiet sadness that will stick with you while reading.

My first experience with Rendon‘s writing, I found this one to be a sad, but realistic feeling thriller set mainly on a Minnesota reservation. A runner training for the Boston marathon, the book opens with Quill hearing a woman scream in the woods. Chilled & frustrated with the lack of progress by the tribal police, Quill can‘t stop herself from investigating on her own. Murder, abduction, domestic violence & drugs all get covered here. Gripping!
