Set in Renaissance Italy, "The Ornatrix" follows Flavia, daughter of a dyer & born with a bird shaped birthmark, from her village to a convent. Once there she becomes an Ornatrix, personal hairdresser & attendant, to the recently widowed & glamorous Ghostanza. Howard explores the multiple issues of beauty & identity: how it is shaped by cultural norms, the physical & mental damages of body shame, the expectations for women, etc. A solid debut.

Gina Ummmm that cover is very mysterious... nice! 7y

Current read
I nearly always read only one book at a time, but I am reading only 50 pages per day of the Hesse.

saresmoore You and @TobeyTheScavengerMonk are both book monogamists! I wonder if it's related to personality. 🤔 I imagine I'm in the minority with my 📚📚📚polyandry. 7y
vivastory @saresmoore Reading multiple books really distracts me. I actually find i read less when i try to balance books. 7y
mjdowens I cheat on all my books with other books. 5-6 going at a time. Just depends on what I am in the mood for. 7y

LeahBergen Monogamist here, too! 🙋🏻 7y
readinginthedark I'm always reading between 25 and 30 books. Mood reader! I get so much more reading done that way. 7y

I hate saying a book is just so-so but this was really just so-so. It was just kind of meh to me.

I was given an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Dark, disturbing, beautiful, & gritty. I loved this book! This is not your clean & easy historical fiction. Some graphic scenes. The ending of this novel was shocking but fits the narrative, & I can‘t wait to discuss this book with someone who has read it! Highly recommended for those that enjoy informative, compelling historical fiction.

unabridgedchick How are you liking it, @Liberty? I've tried twice but haven't been hooked. 7y
Liberty @unabridgedchick I like it, but I feel like there's something about the sentence structure that makes it more complicated than it needs to be? 7y

I'm on the cusp of 'Pick' and 'So-So' with this one, but I liked it more than I didn't. I thought the writing was beautiful; the historical aspect of cosmetics was interesting (and horrifying); the story was ok until the end when it went CRAZY GOOD. I hated the main character - mostly because she was a hateful person; she reminded me of Grenouille in 'Perfume'. If you liked that book you'd maybe like this one too - both are beautiful and horrible.

I don't know about everyone else, but I 100% have a reading hangover after yesterday's #readathon.
I somehow managed to drag myself out of bed to go to work and I suspect it's going to be a VERY long day. I've only got about 100 pages left in this book I started towards the end of the readathon, so I'm going to try and get it finished today.
I hope everybody is recovering ok!

Some days just require one to take oneself out to dinner. And when one's book is set in Italy... (Good so far, though a little slow to get started. The book, not the pasta. I inhaled the pasta.) #bookndinner

I just received THE ORNATRIX in my #bookabuy book subscription for this month. It's set in Italy in the 16th century and sounds … decadent. I think that's a good word.
