Song of Myself
Song of Myself | Walt Whitman
18 posts | 15 read | 2 to read
It was with this first version of "Song of Myself," from the 1855 edition of Leaves of Grass, that Whitman first made himself known to the world. Readers of revised editions will find this version surprising, and often superior.

My favorite section of “SoM” -the section I teach & share the most. I rejoice in Whitman‘s joy in giving himself (and us) permission to ease & loaf & begin this journey together.

I thirty-one years old in perfect health begin,
Hoping to cease not till death.

In 2023, I am taking time to enjoy & celebrate with each of the Whitman‘s 52 sections of “Song of Myself.”

Happy National Poetry Month. 🎉

#poetrymatters April 1: energy

Song of Myself (1892 version), section 1, by Walt Whitman

Full poem available at: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/45477/song-of-myself-1892-version

runswithscissors007 You are gradually making me less intimidated. thank you! 5y
wanderinglynn @runswithscissors007 I‘m so happy to hear that. ☺️ Think of poetry as song lyrics without the music. I‘ve also found that it helps to read poetry aloud. 5y

Happy 200th birthday to Walt Whitman! Whitman is my absolute favorite poet.

Fridameetslucy @Kimberlone too bad you aren‘t able to go to the big nyc symposium at the Grolier Club tomorrow I had one extra ticket but I had to give it up. I will postabout it though and share with you what I learn :) 5y
Kimberlone @Fridameetslucy ahhh I would have loved to see that! Unfortunately I live very far away from NYC in Alaska :( 5y
Fridameetslucy @Kimberlone it was intense. My brain broke by the mid afternoon. I learned so much. And I have a recording of 4 Whitman poems done by an incredible acapella chorus. Omg no words for these beautiful pieces - made me cry from the sheer beauty of a 40 voice chorus evoking the camaraderie I can send the recording and text via email if you want to listen. 5y

I adore the hell out of Walt Whitman. This is the final line of section 1. I Match make sections of this poem for each of my students. This part is theirs and they annotate, outline, and write essays about it. My favorite part of the year! #transendentalism #teachersoflitsy

Some Whitman to get through this #ManicMonday. On animals vs. humans, mania, and power.

1) I didn't take a picture, but I spent a couple of hours reading in Starbucks.
2) Spending time in a crowd, by myself- like in a crowded coffee shop!
3) Fold my laundry as soon as it's done. Maybe get some slow oats going for tomorrow morning.

alisiakae Lol, I hate crowds, so your No. 2 would have the opposite effect on me! 😜 7y

callielafleur @4thhouseontheleft it's a weird thing for me. I like to be around people, but by myself. When I'm alone, my anxiety can go into overdrive. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense 😂 7y
laurieluna Oh slow oats! A good breakfast is a good way to start the day. 😊 xx 7y
callielafleur @miralunasbooknook We make them in our zojirushi rice cooker, and they come out amazing. Highly recommend! I've also done them in my slow cooker, but then I have to make a ton. I like oatmeal, but even I have my limits. 😂 7y

Rereading Whitman to prep for tomorrow‘s class involved a lot of me screaming “enough with the catalogues already” and “seriously another one” and “aromatic armpits? Really?” and “I don‘t care about your life-lumps, Whitman!” It also involved some crying, grunting, and pacing from Rye and several nudges against my leg from Barley. It eventually ended with two of the three of us passed out on the couch.

Song of Myself | Walt Whitman

I bequeath myself to the dirt to grow from the grass I love,
If you want me again look for me under your boot-soles.

You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood.

Failing to fetch me at first keep encouraged,
Missing me one place search another,
I stop somewhere waiting for you.

Usually I get song stuck in my head (and not good ones-my brain is great at playing DJ to mash up oddities). Last night I had a first-poem Lines stuck in my head...so that's new:

You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from your self.

Back in college, I realized I had no exposure to poetry, minus the poems of Edgar Allen Poe (❤️). I ended up taking a Walt Whitman class, and I just couldn't get in to it. Not sure if it was the timing, I wasn't ready for it, the professor, or what.
Maybe this will be my new 2017 resolution - read more poetry! This month I did start Milk and Honey (which I am loving), and I do like this snippet from Song of Myself. 🤔

ErinC Song of Myself 6 is my fav! I ❤️ Whitman so much! 8y
JPeterson @ErinC I will have to try it again then! 8y
BookInMyHands What about novels in verse? I think they make a good way to dip into poetry... 8y

JPeterson @BookInMyHands I've never thought of that before. What would you recommend? Ps - I am a huge Shakespeare fan, plus love the Odyssey and Illiad. 8y
ephemeralwaltz I've done Walt Whitman now in college too and he's just a whole new world. He celebrated so many things about life and discriminted against no one; instead he made individual differences flourish and balanced out every humn being as equal. Simply amazing ❤️ 8y
JPeterson @ephemeralwaltz I'm so glad you pointed this out, all of them seemed to have just gone straight over my head! Do you have a favorite poem of his? 8y
ephemeralwaltz @JPeterson "The Sleepers" is one of my favorites! 8y
JPeterson @ephemeralwaltz Thanks! I'll have to try that one! 8y
BookInMyHands Ooh- that brings to mind Beowulf, but only the Seamus Heaney translation. 8y
BookInMyHands For novels in verse my favorites are both for youth- "Inside Out and Back Again" and "Brown Girl Dreaming." I was also delighted with Sonya Sones' "Hunchback of Nieman Marcus." Just a fun quick read. (edited) 8y
JPeterson @BookInMyHands Thanks! Adding these to my ever-growing tbr list! 8y
