Reclaiming My Decade Lost in Scientology: A Memoir
Reclaiming My Decade Lost in Scientology: A Memoir | Sands Hall
5 posts | 4 read | 18 to read
"With its keen attention to the language and tactics of the church, Hall's memoir is unique among the assortment of Scientology reports and expose?s, offering insight into the certainties that its subjects gain." --The Nation In the secluded canyons of 1980s Hollywood, Sands Hall, a young woman from a literary family, strives to forge her own way as an artist. But instead, Hall finds herself increasingly drawn toward the certainty that Scientology appears to offer. Her time in the Church includes the secretive illness and death of its founder, L. Ron Hubbard, and the ascension of David Miscavige. In this compelling memoir, Hall reveals what drew her into the religion--with its intrigues and unique contemporary vision--and how she came to confront its darker sides and finally escape. "Some of the most penetrating, illuminating prose about how an educated and skeptical person could get so deeply into, and then struggle to escape, what everyone around her warned was a dangerous cult . . . brilliant." --The Underground Bunker "If it is Scientology's offer of a life with meaning that hauls her in . . . it is its approach to meaning that keeps her . . . Hall's fascination with this is palpable." --Camille Ralphs, The Times Literary Supplement

Listening to December's bookclub book chosen by my friend Marge. Intriguing. Narrated by the author.

Glad I listened instead of reading as I would have skipped pages if read. I gave it a thumbs up as if you want to know indepth about the processes of scientology for the individual this is your book.

Wow what an excellent book. If you are looking for a book on Scientology that is shocking with lots of reveals and shocking details this is not the book for you. This is a book full of exploration and inner thoughts of a woman caught up in this cult. It‘s very good.

MedaReadsAlot Looks good! 7y
Reggie @britt_brooke have you read this one? You‘re my go to on books involving cults. Lol 7y
britt_brooke @Reggie I take this as a compliment, haha! 💚 And, no, I haven‘t read it. Sounds good - thanks! #stacked 7y

Anyone else doing the #boutofbooks Readathon this week? It‘s such a fun low pressure Readathon. I will be blogging, Instagramming and tweeting about it this week.

Daisey I am! I won't have much time for reading early in the week as we wrap up our school year, but I should have lots of time later in the week! 7y
Allydanielle88 I'm doing it too. 7y

Ohhh a book on Scientology? Yes, please. I am so fascinated with it. It‘s amazing how many people seem to get sucked on. Also, this popcorn is so delicious!!

BookishMe That flavor is so catchy! Hehee 7y
Weaponxgirl I always feel the most for children in cults like Scientology. Being able to get out when you've been raised to believe in it must be so hard. 7y
WorldsOkayestStepMom If it's about a cult, I'm down for reading it! 7y
