Dr. Seuss Goes to War (Revised)
Dr. Seuss Goes to War (Revised) | Theodor Seuss Geisel, Dr Seuss, Richard H Minear
For decades, readers throughout the world have enjoyed the marvelous stories and illustrations of Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. But few know the work Geisel did as a political cartoonist during World War II, for the New York daily newspaper "PM." In these extraordinarily trenchant cartoons, Geisel presents "a provocative history of wartime politics" ("Entertainment Weekly"). "Dr. Seuss Goes to War" features handsome, large-format reproductions of more than two hundred of Geisel s cartoons, alongside "insightful" ("Booklist") commentary by the historian Richard H. Minear that places them in the context of the national climate they reflect. Pulitzer Prizewinner Art Spiegelman s introduction places Seuss firmly in the pantheon of the leading political cartoonists of our time."

The good “doctor” drew this when we prosecuted Jewish asylum seekers and denied them entry in 1941. ❤️❤️❤️ (it is a sarcastic cartoon)

AJones Oh my! 😳 6y
Slajaunie I did not know this existed!! ❤️ 6y
Purrsistently @Slajaunie yeah. I wonder just how criminal the underground railroad was, or the things Schindler did to rescue children. 6y
Slajaunie Yes indeed! 6y
Cinfhen Wow!!! So eerie! This drawing could be 2018 just switch the name Adolf 6y

When Dr. Seuss keeps it real about America First campaigns. 😳😬 #Resist

Also, I always have an open door if anyone on here needs help. If you're in distress and need someone to talk to, you can private message me on Twitter or Instagram or find me on Goodreads. Sending love to everyone since it's been an especially difficult couple of days. Sending extra love to Muslim folks and other immigrants. Let's have each other's backs on here. 💞✊🏼

Texreader Federal court just halted the ban! Rejoice! 8y
BookishFeminist @Texreader Yep I heard! I'm happy about that 8y
BookishMarginalia Omg! I know the America First slogan is from the movement to keep the US from entering WWII, and was most notably espoused by Charles Lindbergh (who like Henry Ford had notable ant-Semitic views), but I didn't know Dr Seuss had made political cartoons about it. There's a good July 2016 article about the origins of America First and Trump's adoption of it in the New Yorker 👇🏼 8y

BookishFeminist @BookishMarginalia oh thank you for that! I'll definitely read that later. And yea I hadn't realized he made cartoons about it either. Was surprised to find it. 8y
JDHawkins ❤❤❤❤ Thank you for this. 8y
BiblioNyan Thank you so much for your kindness. I appreciate that you're open to listening and sharing love. ❤️ I'm so worried about family & friends, and can only continue to be hopeful. 8y

SuperPunkNinja Love this! ❤❤❤ 8y

Tcip I second that @BookishFeminist having a person who is there to listen as a friend is a prime example of the American values that seem to be swept under the rug as of late. 8y
LeahBergen 💗💗💗 8y
Branwen Thank you so so much for this ♡ 8y
DeeLew 💜💜💜 I just logged out of my Facebook. I can't deal with all of the hate there. The kindness here is the polar opposite of that hate. ❤️❤️❤️ 8y
ReadingSusan Thank goodness for my four sisters. We are united together in a very red state. 8y
kspenmoll Love everyone's way-❤ 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan ❤️❤️ anytime, it's the least I can do from my couch! We're going to keep fighting & you aren't alone. Sending positive energy your way & to your friends and family as well. Do you know anyone that will be directly impacted? 8y
BookishFeminist @Tcip Reaching out makes such a huge difference. I'm really happy to see more people stepping up and doing it lately. We all need support so we don't feel alienated! 8y
BookishFeminist @DeeLew Oh god, Facebook is awful. I haven't deactivated my account but I so rarely go on and it's the best decision I've ever made for my mental health. 💜💜 much love to you! 8y
BookishFeminist @ReadingSusan I can only imagine. I'm lucky to live in a very blue area now but know what it's like to be surrounded by people that stand for what you despise. Incredibly alienating. I'm glad you have your sisters too. I bet there are more folks too that are just afraid or don't know how to speak out. Much love to you 💜💜 8y
Pandyfish This is exactly what I needed to hear- thank you ❤ 8y
BiblioNyan @BookishFeminist I have two friends who are being directly impacted. One of them just got married and his wife is going to get deported even though she followed proper channels and has a legit visa to be here. Another is losing his sister who moved here to finish her college degree two years ago. She only has another semester left, but they're sending her back as well. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan This ban is unconscionable. I can't even imagine what they're going though. Do either of your friends have lawyers? If they don't I recommend they get one. It might not be successful but it might provide a tiny bit of solace in the meantime. (edited) 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan Also if they're interested and don't know where to go for legal help I'm happy to drop you some resources/organizations for where they can seek trustworthy help. 8y
BiblioNyan @BookishFeminist I'm meeting with them tomorrow and Monday so I'll be able to find out more about their situation, and pass along what I can. Thank you so much. It really means a lot. 💛 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan Anything I can do, let me know. I just found you on twitter, I can DM you some organizations & resources there. Are they located in NY/NYC by chance? 8y
[DELETED] 1409720085 Agree, one hundred percent. 8y
Anabnieto I am sure in this community everybody has read The Plot Against America by Philip Roth, but for those who are not so much into books we have the duty to tell them to read not only Orwell, Camus, Huxley... but also this one by Roth. I thought we were far from fiction... how wrong! 8y
Debiw781 ❤❤ 8y
BiblioNyan @BookishFeminist One of them lives in NYC yes. The other lives in San Francisco. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan I know of a legal hotline to call for free immigration advice in NYC. This also has great advice for dealing with ICE: https://twitter.com/yungdilan/status/825409305449005056 and this if they're traveling: https://twitter.com/cherrell_brown/status/825952611379605504 Can give you some possible orgs too. CAIR, National Lawyers Guild, and National Immigration Law Center can probably give referrals for attorneys. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan CUNY CLEAR is offering free legal advice to NY residents. Contact info here: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/C3S7gfnUoAAhnYv.jpg:large 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan I don't know if either of your friends are or know refugees but if they do this is a great resource for pro bono legal help: https://refugeerights.org/get-legal-help/ Worth looking at any way, and they may be able to do referrals if they can't directly help. 8y
BookishFeminist @Bibli0.Nyan And this organization is located directly in San Francisco and would be a great resource for your other friend. This website also keeps a directory of immigration law and legal orgs, many which help with Muslim immigrants specifically. https://www.immigrationadvocates.org/nonprofit/legaldirectory/organization.39266... Sending positive thoughts to you and your friends! 💙💙 (edited) 8y
BiblioNyan @BookishFeminist Oh wow, thank you so very much for all of this!! I've written it all down and I'm going to e-mail this to them right now!! This is a lot of great information!! 💛💛💛 8y

I don't read much non-fiction, so this was definitely an experience. I loved learning about one of my favorite authors, but I was a little disheartened to learn that he didn't like Japanese-Americans. I mean, I understand why he was upset, but being part-Asian myself, I was a little sad.

Lylah He had a very public profuse apology for every racist piece of war propaganda he created. Probably not deserving of complete forgiveness but he definitely owned up to it. 8y
Peaceful_Reader He was a political cartoonist and his satire plays here, there, and well in many of his children's books. 8y
