The priestess Huei has gone missing and Acatl's brother Nuetomoc is found in her room covered in her blood, so as high priest of Mictlantecuhli, the god of the Underworld, Acatl must investigate. But is it a sordid tale of lust and murder, or part of the machinations of court politics as the Emperor is dying, or something more cosmic as deities vie for supremacy? ⬇

rwmg The author mixes mystery, fantasy, and history well in this story with good world building so that the reader can follow the investigation with some sort of sense of what is and is not possible. 5mo

I enjoyed this one and I think that a lot of that has to do with the fact that this felt very urban fantasy just set in Aztec times. Acatl is high priest for the dead and tasked with an investigation into a missing priestess and things just seem to spiral from there. This stands alone well but it is the start of a trilogy. When my other the commitments are done I‘ll pursue the other two.

All set up to head into my #BookSpin #DoubleSpin today. It will be interesting to see another take on Indigenous myths after having read Gods of Jade and Shadow this month already.

#BookReport
Kind of a slow reading week but I'm halfway through Broken Monsters so it was a one and a half book week.

#WeeklyForecast
After I finish Broken Monsters I'm heading into my Double Spin pick. If I finish any more than that I'll work on my library stack.

It took me a little bit to think of something for this prompt! This book is a murder mystery set in the Aztec empire—and the detective is a priest of the goddess of death. It‘s been years since I read it but I liked it. Very dark and bloody for sure.

I will be continuing to keep an eye on the #IntegrateYourShelf tag for this one!

Mehso-so

Noir inspired fantasy set in Aztec empire. The worldbuilding and fantasy elements were amazing, and the main character had a distinct and unusual personality, very dry and withdrawn. Ultimately the mystery, the combat description, and the climax were not my favorites.

My Old Fella Jake just a few weeks before he passed away May 1. He took a queer fancy one day, blind as he was, to get into my books and scatter them everywhere. He didn‘t hurt them, just pushed them about, and it amused me greatly. I miss him every day. #petsofLitsy

Aztec noir... who know that was even a thing?! Not me! But I really enjoyed it. Hoping my library has the rest of the series.
