The Boy Who Lost Fairyland
The Boy Who Lost Fairyland | Catherynne M. Valente
22 posts | 27 read | 28 to read
When a young troll named Hawthorn is stolen from Fairyland by the Red Wind, he becomes a changeling-a human boy-in the strange city of Chicago, a place no less bizarre and magical than Fairyland. Left with a human family, Hawthorn struggles with his troll nature and his changeling fate, while attending school and learning about human kindnesses-and un-kindnesses. In a starred review, Kirkus noted, "Every page of this book contains at least one stunning sentence. Valente's descriptions of the human world make it sound like an exotic place, even when she just lists things to see: "diamonds and dinosaur bones and Canadian geese and the Cathedral of Notre Dame and ballpoint pens." Readers may wish the words were food, so they could eat them up. And they may keep reading this series for just as long as people have been arguing about Oz."Time magazine has praised Catherynne M. Valente's Fairyland books as "one of the most extraordinary works of fantasy, for adults or children, published so far this century." In this fourth installment of her saga, Valente's wisdom and wit will charm readers of all ages.

An interlude in September's tale but just as richly told as the rest of the series. Looking good forward to the final book to see how thr author ties it all up.

When I first realized how much time would be spent in the “real world“ and how much time would be spent with a new cast of characters, I was utterly disappointed. How silly to not trust that Valente would make you fall in love with this story just as much as you loved the last three in the series! The story was wonderful, but I'm looking forward to returning to September in the next book.

I finished this yesterday. It's why I mentioned something this morning about reading two young people books in a row. I realized that I never posted about this.
It was so good. I love this series. I have the last book and I'm not ready to read it yet because I don't want the series to end.
There were a few pages toward the beginning that made me cry, literally tears it hit me so hard. Yes, these books are for kids but yes they are that beautiful

vumblereads I really like Catherynne M Valente‘s style of writing. I read Deathless, and it automatically became a favorite just with the first few chapters. 5y

How they pretended to struggle through Peter Rabbit (...)and how they gloried in A Midsummer Night‘s Dream in the woods behind the school! (...)Thomas‘s kids (...) snuck glances at The Faerie Queene, which Tamburlaine had smuggled to them from her house. She revealed it the way an older girl might open her satchel to show a stolen bottle of gin out of her father‘s cabinet. Sighs of longing sang up over the children at the sights of its gilt cover.

Kalalalatja Love Catherynne Valente ❤️ I‘m reading this by her at the moment 6y
Leniverse @Kalalalatja Nice! I wasn‘t aware of that one. Looks a bit too dramatic for my younger child though. Might have to sneakily read it on my own. 6y
Kalalalatja It is dramatic, and there is a lot of about death and resurrection, but it is also fun and delightful, and filled with references only an adult would get 👌 6y

julesG That sums it up nicely! 6y
Moray_Reads I love these books so much ❤️ 6y
Leniverse @Moray_Reads I‘m reading them with my son. We both agree that the first one was brilliant. The second he didn‘t like as much and the third was too abstract for him. This one we are enjoying so far. 6y

GatheringBooks @JoScho we went via airbnb and it was unbelievably cheap, but oh so far to get to mahibadhoo (the island where we stayed), and it‘s really roughing it out, but the mostly-deserted beach is well worth it. 6y

Well, I was worried for nothing. Hawthorn, Tamburlaine and Blunderbuss were so captivating. As ever Valente's writing is is lively, poetic, magical and so touching. The bitter-sweetness growing through the series is particularly poignant as the fairy characters struggle to fit in in the human world where their quirks and imagination aren't always accepted. It's a great adventure and September's role, though small, was perfect.

Kalalalatja I knew you would like it! 👏👏 6y
Moray_Reads @Kalalalatja I should never doubt Valente but I can be unreasonably loyal to characters, that's why I STILL haven't read Robin Hobb's Liveship Traders books (but I will. One day) 6y
Kalalalatja I need a new Valente fix soon! I need to get Radiance in my life. And I get it, but seeeeeriously, the Liveship Traders is an amazing trilogy! But I‘m taking Hobb‘s books in publication order, so it was easier for me to pick them up. 6y

Moray_Reads @Kalalalatja Radiance is phenomenal. I've only read the Farseer Trilogy and the Tawny Man Trilogy, I haven't even braved Fitz and the Fool! 6y
Kalalalatja @Moray_Reads I still have the Rainwild Chronicles to read before I can pick up Fitz and the Fool, and I‘m okay stretching out my reading a bit. But I‘m beginning to feel that Hobb itch! 6y
Moray_Reads I was still in secondary school when I read Fool's Fate. That was 15 years ago! 😳😮😳 6y
avalinah Can't wait till I read this one! I've just read book 1 & 2 so far. 6y
Moray_Reads @avalinah I've just one left now 🙁 but they're all wonderful 6y

I'll admit to being just a smidgen apprehensive about this one because my wonderful girl September isn't the protagonist, but it's Fairyland and it's Valente and I trust her...I guess

Kalalalatja It is still good, but I had the same feelings! 6y

I love this series, even though I have to go slowly through them. I have been spreading them out, but will probably read the last one soon. The writing is beautiful and whimsical and makes me fall in love with it over and over. This entry in the series doesn‘t actually follow the main character, but still feels similar.

I 1st read this 4th book in the series 2 years ago. But I have to tell you something: 2017 me thinks 2015 me was crazy! I only gave it 3 stars?! I don't know what I was thinking. This time around, I LOVED it. Yes, it's a bit jarring to discover that September (the protagonist of the 1st 3 books) is a minor character but Valente admits as much -- & insists that the interlude is necessary. 2017 me believes her. & Hawthorn & Tam are just as charming.

monalyisha @Laalaleighh Don't make me choose a favorite! 🙈 7y
Laalaleighh @monalyisha I won‘t haha! Have you seen she has a new book out? 7y
monalyisha @Laalaleighh I hadn't seen that! So exciting... thank you! (I have to admit, I tried "Deathless" & wasn't the biggest fan. I've also had "Radiance" on my shelf for a super-long time & haven't touched it. But I love that this is another "children's" book!) 7y

My shelves aren't particularly full of books with #boyinthetitle, but I did find these three (and remembered one more after I took the picture 🙄). I loved The Boy who Lost Fairyland, and I can't wait to get my hands on the last Fairyland book in March!

All of the rarity and beauty that made me love the first book in the series so much! My heart swells and breaks for the characters, and I want so much to jump in and participate in what they're trying to do! I haven't enjoyed an entire series this much since I was a child! ❤️
