Separation of Church and Hate
Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person's Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists, and Flock-Fleecing Frauds | John Fugelsang
In the spirit of George Carlin and Christopher Hitchens, the son of a former Catholic nun and a Franciscan brother delivers a deeply irreverent and biblically correct takedown of far-right Christian hatreda book for believers, atheists, agnostics, and anyone wholl ever have to deal with a Christian nationalist. For more than two centuries, the United States Constitution has given us the right to a society where church and state exist independently. But Christianity has been hijacked by far-right groups and politicians who seek to impose their narrow views on government, often to justify oppressive and unequal policies. The extremists who weaponize the Bible for earthly power arent actually on the side of Jesusand historically they never have been. How do we fight back against those actingliterallyin bad faith? Comedian and broadcaster John Fugelsang finally offers the answers. In this informative, perspective-shifting book, Fugelsang takes readers through common fundamentalist arguments on abortion, immigration, LGBTQ rights, and moreexposing their hypocrisy and inaccuracy through scripture, common sense, and deeply inappropriate humor. It offers practical tips on how to debate your loved one, coworker, or neighbor on the issues that divide us using that Bible they claim to follow. But Fugelsangs message is about more than just taking down hypocrites. Its about fighting for the love, mercy, and service that are supposed to make up the heart of Christianity. Told with Fugelsangs trademark blend of radical honesty, comedy, and deep political and religious knowledge, Separation of Church and Hate is the book every American needs today. Its a rallying cry for compassion and clarity for anyone of any faith whos sick of religion being used as a cloaking device for hate.

If you are celebrating the birth of Jesus this season, I hope it is the Biblical one, and not the made-up MAGA/fundamentalist one ✌

This was an enlightening listen, but I didn't like it as much as I wanted to. There are some amazing insights into the bastardization of Christ's teachings, but they are scattered through what it basically a 10-hour Bible study. Many of his points are repudiations of citation of specific Bible verses by socially conservative fundamentalists; unfortunately, I rarely interact with anyone eloquent enough to put that much effort into their hate.

TieDyeDude It certainly gives many examples of ways you can tell which Bible-thumpers have never actually read the book they can't shut up about, in regards to many issues like abortion, same-sex marriage, immigration, welfare, etc. It is an interesting thought exercise and historical lesson, but, as a guide, not overly practical in real-world conversations. And since I've never read the Bible, I wouldn't rely on the Bible to point out what a POS someone is. 1w

3.5⭐️ I had different expectations when I started the book and what I thought I would get and what I did get was totally different. I also read the book too fast and should have read it slower. #2025 #nonfiction #politics #christianity

Two favorites for November.
-Jimmy Perez returns in The Killing Stones
-John Fugelsang thoroughly lays out the case against Christian nationalism using biblical references and his unique form of humor. It may be “preaching to the choir” or it could be “teaching the choir how to sing.”

I saw a book review call this “a deeply irreverent” takedown of the Christian Nationalist / evangelical movement. I, however, found the former VH1 VJ / comedian turned political pundit quite reverent when reviewing the Biblical texts and offering context to out-of-context talking points by the far right, as only the son of a former nun and former monk could.

Awk_Word_Smith The book was structured to address how misinterpretations of rabbinical law and the Gospels along with the problematic letters of Paul have given ultra conservatives sound bite theology without context or substance, and in some cases, outright lies about what scripture and Jesus‘s teachings say about issues from abortion to immigrants to LGBTQ+ to healthcare to gun control. 1mo

Taking a quick break from back-to-back-to-back sci-fi and fantasy fiction for a little social commentary theology from a former VH1 VJ (who is also the son of a nun and a monk; I can‘t make this stuff up).

RamsFan1963 Part of me what's to read this, even though I know it will make me angrier than usual about the role of religion in politics 1mo
Awk_Word_Smith @RamsFan1963 It‘s pretty on brand for the son of a former nun and monk who were more invested in serving God through service to others. If you have ever seen him on CNN as a political pundit, then the book is very much in that same vein. It‘s constructed as a rebuttal to far-right Christian nationalist and evangelical talking points. 1mo
