The Masterpiece
The Masterpiece | Emile Zola
"The Masterpiece", as it is entitled in English, is a fictionalised account of the Impressionist circle around Paul Cezanne. Zola, who had become an eminent art critic, turns his skills as a forensic commentator on France of the Second Empire and its emerging avant-garde art circles, creates a stunning story of the misunderstood artist whose desire to create the ultimate painting is thwarted by his own timidity and the intolerance of the art world which was unwilling to accept the revolutionaryu art forms of the young men who rebelled against the Salon.

This classic first published in 1886 is long, but it is precisely the abundance of details and extremely detailed descriptions that leave a profound mark on the reader and make it hard to forget.
The novel recounts the fictional tragic life of an original and genious artist misunderstood by the Parisian art world of the 19th century. It is said to actually reflect Zola's friendship with now famous painter Paul Cézanne.

#ReadingEurope2020 @BarbaraBB France #Classicschallenge2020 @Reviewsbylola The 14th entry in the Rougon Macquart series considers the art scene in late 19th century Paris through the lens of struggling (and mostly failing) painter Claude Lantier. Not my favorite in the series, which surprised me because I love art and art history, but nevertheless a worthwhile read.

BarbaraBB I‘ve never heard of this one 😊 4y
Reviewsbylola Zola is an author I still have to read! 4y
arubabookwoman @Reviewsbylola He is one of my all time favorites, but I never recommend starting at the beginning with him. I usually recommend people start with Germinal, and I think everyone I‘ve recommended Germinal to has loved it. 4y

Zola has his character Sandoz in Book 14 of the Rougon Macquart series describe his (Zola's) concept for the Rougon Macquart series.

Resuming my read of the Rougon Macquart series I‘m starting The Masterpiece, book 14 of the 20 books in the series. In The Masterpiece, Zola explores the literary and art worlds of late 19th century Paris.
