The City Stained Red
The City Stained Red | Sam Sykes
STEP UP TO THE GATES After years in the wilds, Lenk and his companions have come to the city that serves as the world's beating heart. The great charnel house where men die surer than any wilderness. They've come to claim payment for creatures slain, blood spilled at the behest of a powerful holy man. And Lenk has come to lay down his sword for good. But this is no place to escape demons.

For any that are in a Scott Lynch, Gentlemen Bastard‘s, withdrawal, I‘d say that this is a good replacement. I‘m not a huge fantasy reader but I do love the bumbling hero, full of sarcastic wit, and Lenk is good contender. A cast of amazing anti-heroes, simply trying to live where they can be accepted, sadly walk into a town, overrun by a civil war, and demons.

Thoroughly enjoyed and will continue the trilogy.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fantasy readers/lovers: why there gotta be gigantic spiders!? Finally a character reacted the way I would… running screaming in terror. 🤣😳

It was slightly warmer tonight so I tried out our new, makeshift catio. Lily seems to like it, although she got scared when big trucks went by.

I usually read books that I know something about from reviews or are written by authors I've already read. I checked this book out because I follow the author on Twitter. So far I'm loving the misfit band of adventurers without having any idea where the story is going.

Fun fantasy adventure with a great cast of characters and fantastic humor. Demons, elves, dragonmen, and spiders the size of horses😱 recommended for anyone who enjoys fantasy with foul mouthed characters and dirty jokes!

I need to start my next read for TFoB. Several choices, so I'm going for the book with a map! And I already misread one of the town names. Shict Town I read as Poop Town, but the other word. Poop Town sounds funnier, though. I have no idea if Shict Town is central to this story, but in my head it shall always be 💩💩💩Poop Town💩💩💩And that's why I teach middle school. #TeachersofLitsy

For Tucson Festival of Books, "Why So Serious" during the 4-5pm Sunday is the ONLY time slot where I have one panel chosen. Just one. All other time slots have 3-5 panels that I want to see. Some choices will be narrowed down if I can't snag tickets on March 6, but still...argh!!! How do I choose? ?This festival needs to be longer.?

josie281 I will be your clone! I wish I lived near this! ❤️ Sam Sykes!! 8y
DogMomIrene @josie281 Have you heard Sam Sykes on any panels? Read his stuff? Since he lives in the Phoenix area, he's usually at TFoB and the Phoenix Comicon. He's hilarious! Best panel I saw him on also had Patrick Rothfuss and David Brin. He's one of the authors I keep meaning to read. Any suggestions on which book of his I should read, especially if I only have time to read one of his before the Festival? 8y
josie281 I've read the first two from The City Stained Red series. They are big reads (600+pgs). Excellent reads but large. He does have some comics as well. Hoopla has them if you have access to that. I have NOT seen him. I wish I have, but I live in "no authors visit much" land. 8y
DogMomIrene @josie281 YES! I have the first book in The City Stained Red! Thank you👍🏼 8y

High-ish fantasy with excellent world-building and even some great female secondary characters that I suspect will actually be the true stars of the trilogy.
Full review over on Goodreads.

8leagueboot I adore Sam Sykes' Twitter. He's a riot. 8y
RanaElizabeth @8leagueboot True story: I was really afraid to read his books because I love him on Twitter so much. What if he did something in his books which made me not want to keep following him? 8y
8leagueboot @RanaElizabeth I completely get this. The strange concerns of being a reader in the modern age 😂 8y

This was a great step into the fantasy realm for me who is not a traditional fantasy reader. It is a bag ass book but not full of fluff. Those are necessary pages. #fantasy #bigbook #kittiesoflitsy #blackcats

Giving this book by Sam Sykes a shot. Couple chapters in and I really appreciate his deviation from the standard fantasy "elf, dwarf, halfling" setup.

This is wonderful visceral language and an engaging (if sometimes horrifying) story. Not an easy read at all, but well worth the effort.

This story takes you into the city of Cier'Djaal and the horrible situations 6 adventurers have in its massive walls. The adventurers find themselves in the middle of multiple wars that explode and then get the responsibility of fixing it. Character relationships are incredibly good and believable.
