Tim and Pete were once lovers. They meet again when Tim finds himself stranded on Laguna beach and calls on Pete for a ride home. The road leads them through South Central and West Hollywood, by way of a host of volatile characters, eventually landing on the doorstep of a gay anarchist group.

@Centique @Reggie Tim and Pete continue to travel! (I told him the book was his now to pass along. 🙂)

I couldn‘t get the rest of the text thread to show but basically, he loves the book and recommended After Hours as a movie pairing. He also told me I missed a lot of music when I made the playlist, ha!

Reggie Awwww Greg Araki, I miss his earlier stuff. 2y

@Reggie Tim and Pete has not left me. I made a playlist of all the music mentioned. It‘s collaborative so if I missed some, I‘m hoping my partner and friend will help fill it out as the read it. My partner is at the bathhouse part and really enjoying the book. When he finishes it I‘m sending it to my friend in Seattle. Sharing the love for JRB. 💜

BarbaraBB Such a cool idea. Loved this book too. 2y
Reggie This is awesome! It‘d be cool if the songs Pete sang while he thought Tim was in the audience right before they get back together were real songs. So happy JRB is on his way to Seattle. 💜 I hope he keeps traveling the world. I feel like Cher at the end of MASK where her son has died and she puts pins in the map saying-you‘re gonna get to go everywhere you want baby. Lololol 2y

Raucously crass abt violence & gay sex, JRB isn‘t worried if you find him off-putting & that‘s a big part of what makes this fast ride thru an early-90s LA night so enjoyable.

But just behind the snappy pop culture-laden dialogue simmers rage at a country that ignores or belittles the AIDS epidemic. What wld happen if that rage was acted upon? The question goes from theoretical to urgent and real for T & P as dawn approaches.

TY, @Reggie 💜

shawnmooney Your review makes me want to finally pull my unread copy off the shelf and get busy! 🌈🌈 3y
Michael_Gee @shawnmooney that‘s great! You should! It‘s a trip. Fast read but loaded. I‘ve been thinking about it a lot since finishing it. 3y
Reggie So glad you liked it! 3y
shawnmooney @Michael_Gee Shall do - and I promise not to blame you if I don‘t get along with it as well as you have! :-) 3y

1st reread of this book for me. Published in 1992, James Robert Baker expressed rage at the do nothingness concerning HIV/AIDS by our government and all the right wing hate with this novel about Tim and Pete, 2 ex boyfriends who reconnect one night. With the L.A area as a backdrop and a side plot by HIV infected pornstars to kill Ronald Reagan this book is hardly unforgettable. I wonder if he was still alive what books JRB might have written👇🏼

Reggie about our current crazy times. 3y
TrishB Well the right wing hate didn‘t improve much 😞 3y
BarbaraBB I loved this one - thanks to you 💜 3y

Reggie @TrishB yeah, even though it does feel like strides have been made, some of the stuff still feels the same almost 30 years later. 3y

ValerieAndBooks Scrolled through this book‘s Litsy page and I see that it was 3 years ago that you gave this to me and that I read/reviewed this. Feels like yesterday 😳 . I mean, that it feels so recent that I read it because I remember so well the experience of reading it! (edited) 3y
Reggie @ValerieAndBooks it feels just like yesterday. And with the pandemic and 2020 somehow it also feels like 10 years ago at the same time. Lol. Yeah, his books aren‘t easily forgotten. Hope you and the kiddos are doing well, Valerie. 3y
TheBookHippie Reagan in the 80s I just cannot did I really live through that? Gah I miss my friends .. such a hard to explain experience. I‘m going to get a copy of this. 3y
Reggie @TheBookHippie I was just a kid in the 80‘s but later on I remember reading And the Band Played On in my 20‘s and thinking about all the people lost during the 80‘s who could‘ve been. It‘s very sad to think about. 3y
TheBookHippie @Reggie late teens and twenties literally one of three people alive it‘s hard to explain to people. Longtime Companion movie is a bit of what I felt. So much goodness just lost .. 3y

Tim and Pete are ex-boyfriends who meet up again and drive through LA just after the riots. It is an evening filled with sex (thinking, talking, doing) with the threat and presence of Aids everywhere. The music, the movies, the books: all are perfect references to the 90s. Even the Chili Peppers 🌶 made it to this irresistible Californian speed read. Thank you @Reggie , for sending it. I loved it ❤️

Thank you, @Reggie , for sending me this. It‘s impossible to describe in 451 characters. So much going on in this novel!

I wish the author had lived long enough and stayed with his film-making dreams. This had a Quentin Tarantino feel to it.

Some readers (if an out-of-print copy can be found) may be uncomfortable with the various gay sex scenes. There‘s also anger served in dark humor format. But definitely an unforgettable book.

More👇

ValerieAndBooks @Reggie I also wonder if parts were semi-autobiographical, especially whenever Tim and Pete reminisced about friends and former sex partners who had succumbed to AIDS. 6y
Kaye I‘m glad you liked the book.. I‘d be one that‘d have a problem with the bedroom escapades. Nothing to do with the Gay part of it. I just don‘t like reading about that in general. It could be because I‘m an old Fogey, but if that‘s the case, I‘ve been one my whole life. They can just head in that direction, then CUT , THATS A WRAP. I can figure the rest out on my own without a play by play description. 6y
Reggie Yeah, sorry about the blatant sex, but I think he was so sick of people not talking about anything at the time he just threw it all out there. He was pretty angry about the government‘s non response to the AIDS epidemic, and how gays were treated. I don‘t know if you could tell with the assassination plot? Lol. Yes!!!!!! To the Tarantino. And I‘m sure he knew a lot of people who died. He was in the L.A. area. I‘m glad you read it. 6y

ValerieAndBooks @Kaye I understand— that‘s why I wanted to mention that exists in this book, especially since it‘s so hard to find in the first place. (edited) 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Reggie no need to apologize (to me, anyway) about that aspect of the book. He certainly did not whitewash and kept it real. Yes, lots of casual sex mentioned, but for him to pretend that didn‘t exist would have been false. 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Reggie thanks again and I‘ll get to the other books, too! I sent the package out and it should be to you next Friday (media mail 😊) 6y
Reggie Thanks!!! 6y
BarbaraBB I just finished this one and agree it should make a great Tarantino movie! 4y

Started this last night. This will be a wild ride!!

It seems to take turns being serious (as in their discussions about who has taken “the test” and when) and being funny. Or both at once, such as Tim and Pete‘s reminiscing here.

This is one of the books @Reggie sent me when I won his giveaway. Thanks again!!

Reggie You welcome!!! I hope you enjoy it. 6y
ValerieAndBooks @Reggie another thing about this is all the 90s pop culture references....still pondering the meaning of “the body of a man but the brain of Sean Young”. What‘s her brain supposed to be like? Whatever happened to her? I have not thought about her for YEARS. 6y

Now that Litsy is back up, I can finally share with you all the books that the wonderful @Reggie sent me. I am so lucky to have won your recent giveaway, Reggie. Loved the letter you included with the books explaining each choice. Tagged the bottom book, Tim and Pete, because the spine didn‘t show up well in the pic. I think I‘ll read this one first. THANK YOU Reggie 😘!

#BecausetheNight Ex-lovers, Tim and Pete, get thrust together by fate one night, one having escaped a bad date, the other, looking for a fellow AA friend who has fallen off the wagon. This is a gay romance as much as it is an anti-valentine to Southern California and the times right after the L.A.riots. There‘s even a plot to assassinate ex-President Ronald Reagan by HIV infected gay pornstars. All in one night. It‘s easily in my top 3.#rocktober

Cinfhen Why wasn't this made into a film??? You are definitely one of my favorites @Reggie 💕💕 6y
Reggie @Cinfhen because this was published in the 90‘s and it was before it‘s time. This author killed himself in 1997. And his anger at the state of being gay in America was not always well received. Right back atcha Cindy.😘 6y
DivineDiana Quite a story! Sad to learn of the author‘s tragedy. 😞 6y

His name is Robert James Baker, he was gay, wrote these angry, satirical, and wildly amusing adventures. My favorite book of all time, Boy Wonder, is by him, and another, Tim and Pete is easily in my top 5. He committed suicide in 1997. #authorilove #lgbtq

shawnmooney I remember 'Tim and Pete', but just the title: sadly cannot even remember if I read it. That means I must read it--either again or for the first time. I didn't know any of the other information in your post and I'm quite moved by it. ❤ 7y
Reggie @shawnmooney Tim and Pete is awesome. You should. There's this other book, Adrenaline, because of his depiction of the LA police dept he had to use a pseudonym. He received death threats for that book. That was the first book of his I found, or that found me at a this used bookstore I used to go to. He wanted to be a filmmaker but got disillusioned so just focused on his writing. 7y
