The Happy Hooker
The Happy Hooker: My Own Story | Xaviera Hollander
7 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
How did you first learn about sex? If you grew up in the 1970s, it may have been from a gleefully lusty tour guide named Xaviera Hollander In the late 1960s -- that era of sexual chaos, when Playboy Clubs and love-ins were competing for national attention -- a beautiful, intelligent young Dutch secretary named Xaviera de Vries moved to New York, grew swiftly tired of her desk job . . . and soon became the most visible and glamorous madam the city had ever seen. As Xaviera Hollander, she published a shockingly candid account of her life behind the brothel door. The Happy Hooker shot straight to the top of the bestseller lists, sold more than fifteen million copies, and made this enterprising young woman an international phenomenon. Thirty years later, these delightfully explicit tales of the '60s and '70s swingers' scene -- including countless jaw-dropping stories of lesbianism, bondage, fetishism, and more -- remain as titillating as ever, charged with the mix of shrewd observation and uninhibited appetite that made Hollander an irresistible storyteller. The Happy Hooker is a classic: the world's greatest book on the world's oldest profession.

#FunFridayphoto My first adult book. I cringe now to think about it and I am decades beyond the 10 year old I was when I found this one. My mother loved to knit. I thought it was about knitting. I.thought.it.was.about.knitting. Spoiler alert: it isn't. @Liberty

Well-ReadNeck 😂😂😂😂😂😂 8y
CherylDeFranceschi Ha! Our dad had this one hidden and my friends and I used to read out of it all the time! We, um, learned a lot. And yeah, there's something in there I'm still traumatized about! 8y

For #funphotofriday, here's my first adult book... In every sense of the word 😜. I was 10. At my grandmother's, I would go to her back bedroom and read her Reader's Digest Condensed books. One day, this was back there. And I read it, & nobody stopped me. It was pretty horrifying, especially for a 10 year old. I got pretty far before I put it down & ran away. To this day, it's one of the few books I never finished, & never will 😂 @Liberty

LauraBeth Your post made me 😂 8y
SusanInTiburon Oh, ew, I would have run away too! 😝 8y

CherylDeFranceschi Yes. I'm still traumatized by something I read in there! 8y
Sweettartlaura @CherylDeFranceschi I could make a good guess as to what part it was 😏. It was allllllll really tough for a 10 year old to take in. But I hung in there...until I got to this one particular point ... by a pool ... and that was it for my little brain😮😢 8y
Sweettartlaura Incidentally I saw her on a talk show on the ...40th (maybe?) anniversary of its publication. She was being lauded for being a pioneer in women's sexuality. No, I said, just no. And I couldn't watch anymore just like I couldn't read any more 😂 8y
Melkyl And I thought I was bad because I used to read the dirty parts of the Harlequin Romance novels that the lady I babysat for had at her house 😂 8y
Sweettartlaura Oh, @Melwilk , if only it had been that innocent 😂 8y
