This is the story of the Tademy family, beginning just before the “Colfax Riot” (more aptly referred to as a massacre). The first half is very difficult and uncomfortable to read. It‘s tense, and scary, and what this community endures is horrific. But what rises out is determination, resolve, grit and love. What an important book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Reading this one next. It has been on my shelf forever. I purchased it as a bargain book because I so enjoyed Cane River by Tademy, but then it sat. And sat.... It is my #doublespin book for October. #bookspin is great for #clearingtheshelves! ❤️📚

This historical novel based on the author‘s family history in Louisiana beginning during Reconstruction shows strength and persistence passed down from generation to generation. Very moving.

I can‘t stand the use of the term riot for these events. It is a very misleading term that definitely had me ill-informed in history until I was old enough to figure this out myself.

Book #12 on my #BookSpin list has been on my GoodReads TBR since 7/2/2014. I enjoyed Tademy‘s debut, Cane River, in 2018 and feel sure I‘ll love this too. I grabbed this copy from a library book sale. This will work for #Louisiana for #ReadtheUSA2020 too. There‘s no time like the present to get started & commit myself so I‘m getting started now.

Another book I‘m super excited to read that has been on my TBR for ten forevers. I have heard mixed reviews from people but I‘m really thinking I am going to love this one!! Have you read this? Any thoughts? Did you like it?

Ended up giving up on this book halfway through (something that NEVER happens as I rarely give up on a book). I don't know what it was about it, I just couldn't get into it. #didnotfinish
