Pickpick

Although a great deal of the original contemporary documents & files have now been lost, those that remain are here examined to see what they tell us about the thoughts of those investigating the crimes at the time. It follows the murders chronologically with a great deal of cross-referencing to provide an objective look at the killings. This is not a seamless narrative of the crime that reads like a novel. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf This is a meticulous examination of the remaining physical evidence (letters, reports, interview transcripts etc) of the crimes of Jack the Ripper. There's a lot of additional information about the people named & events that occurred on the periphery of the murders contained in the references & I spent a lot of time flipping back & forth between the main book & the reference section.

OutsmartYourShelf It's definitely given me a lot to think about. This is definitely more of an academic style read & can be a little tough-going at times, but I found it worth persevering.
5🌟

Mehso-so

Film star Lulabelle Rock had 12 clones of herself made: each one fulfilling a different role in public. Now, to generate some publicity for her latest film, she creates one more & this 13th clone also has a specific task - to eliminate all the other Lulabelle clones. No. 13 heads to Bubble City & starts her task, but as she starts to work her way through the list, she begins to wonder if there's more to life than being an assassin. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf All the ingredients were there: clones (I loved Orphan Black), the fame angle, the question of what truly makes a person unique & what constitutes life, but unfortunately this just didn't work for me. The clone aspect was intriguing, I liked the fact that the only way to really tell a clone apart from the real thing was that they didn't have lines on their palms but that this could be done via surgery. Hmm could make things tricky. 3mo
OutsmartYourShelf Also the whole concept of the killing of an original by a clone being classed as murder, but the original killing their clones is acceptable. They are viewed as the property of the original & therefore can be disposed of. Plus there's the whole falling in love with another clone. Morality minefield! Overall though it was all very surface-skimming & not as dark as it could have been. 3⭐

This 1949 Caldecott-winner tells the story of winter coming to a woodland area and the preparations the animals make gathering food, looking for warm shelters and places to escape the colder weather.

DECEMBER #CHILDRENSCLASSICREAD2023

Should be at your local library in some form I am looking for a freebie as well!

This can work for #192025challenge #wintergames or #midwintersolace as well 📘💙❄️

All welcome!

TheBookHippie @tpixie it‘s so busy this time of year and this came highly recommended by our art teacher! A longer picture book seems to be a good fit for this December! 4mo
TheBookHippie @TheAromaofBooks our art teacher recommended it to me! So that makes sense!!! 4mo
tpixie @TheAromaofBooks @TheBookHippie I did get the free audible book but when I heard about the illustrations I did check in our library has it. I‘m hoping to go get it tonight! 4mo

TheBookHippie @Andrew65 I agree! Need to bail! 1y
JenReadsAlot I want to be a better book bailer! Lol 1y
IndoorDame Ooh, I like that you actually have a concrete plan for DNFs. 50 pages sounds super reasonable! 1y
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame that‘s my thought why push through after 50? Seems silly. 1y
TheBookHippie @JenReadsAlot I have to be or I‘ll never get through my TBR! 1y
Soubhiville I like a dedicated bail plan too. I find mine happen around 75 pages, I don‘t know why I keep pushing that far. 1y
Librarybelle Looks like a great reading plan!! 1y
TheBookHippie @Soubhiville 😅 you are more optimistic! (edited) 1y

1) I‘m taking part in #bookspinbingo, #winterreadathon, #roll100 and the #192025challenge for December

2) My favourite winter holiday was a Christmas trip for Christmas 2004 to PVR. It was memorable not only because it was my first time at an all-inclusive and it was also when the 2004 Tsunami hit the Indian Ocean.

#wondrouswednesday

Eggs Best of luck with all those challenges 👏🏻👏🏻 1y
