Yesternight: A Novel | Cat Winters
33 posts | 20 read | 61 to read
From the author of The Uninvited comes a haunting historical novel with a compelling mystery at its core. A young child psychologist steps off a train, her destination a foggy seaside town. There, she begins a journey causing her to question everything she believes about life, death, memories, and reincarnation. In 1925, Alice Lind steps off a train in the rain-soaked coastal hamlet of Gordon Bay, Oregon. There, she expects to do nothing more difficult than administer IQ tests to a group of rural schoolchildren. A trained psychologist, Alice believes mysteries of the mind can be unlocked scientifically, but now her views are about to be challenged by one curious child. Seven-year-old Janie ODaire is a mathematical genius, which is surprising. But what is disturbing are the stories she tells: that her name was once Violet, she grew up in Kansas decades earlier, and she drowned at age nineteen. Alice delves into these stories, at first believing theyre no more than the product of the girls vast imagination. But, slowly, Alice comes to the realization that Janie might indeed be telling a strange truth. Alice knows the investigation may endanger her already shaky professional reputation, and as a woman in a field dominated by men she has no room for mistakes. But she is unprepared for the ways it will illuminate terrifying mysteries within her own past, and in the process, irrevocably change her life.

Final two.
Which would you prefer for #LMPBC #ROUND12 #GroupW?
Either works for me. I‘m hoping for a creepy and spooky good time. 👻

BookwormAHN I would prefer Ghost Writer but both sound good. 3y
Reggie I vote for Yesternight, but seriously, whatever you pick will be fine. 3y
JackOBotts I‘m leaning toward Ghost Writer, but both will jump on my TBR, for sure! 3y

I have so many perfectly fine, sad abandoned books because I get easily distracted (squirrel!) So I'd like to join in on March's #BookSpin
Such a fun idea.
Books are numbered 1-20, left to right, top to bottom. They include a mishmash of paperbacks, hard covers, ebooks, and audio books that I have owned for at least a year; many much longer than that.
@TheAromaofBooks

MaleficentBookDragon Andddddd I've switched out the book choices twice since I posted a few minutes ago. (Squirrel!) 4y
Leftcoastzen 😂❤️I should do this too. though I call my fickle short attention span “Oh look, a unicorn.”🦄 4y
TheAromaofBooks haha Thank you for playing along and hopefully this will help you get at least one taken care of in March 😂 I know all about those squirrels!! 4y

Some of the books from my book stacks with an #umbrella ☂️or two ☂️☂️on their covers. I have read all of them except for "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" (I'll get to it one of these days) ?????? & the free Audible Original "Lucky Suit."

Cinfhen Lots of umbrellas ☔️ never realized just how many 😯 5y
Jinster Nice books. What did you think of Paper Magician? I've just had it recommended. 5y
DebinHawaii @Cinfhen I know! I actually had another 3 or 4 I didn't use. ☂️☂️😆☂️☂️☂️ 5y
DebinHawaii @Jinster I read it and the rest of the series a few years ago and enjoyed it. It's an easy read & interesting world building. 5y

Which should I read next?

Update: First I‘ll read By Book or by Crook, then Yesternight. I need something lighter after The Graveyard Apartment.😔

LeahBergen I have Yesternight stacked - so how about that one? 😄 6y

4⭐️ Prepare to be creeped out at times, have your belief on reincarnation challenged (or supported) at times, and guessing on this book up til the end. In which you will say “That did not just happen!!” I‘m coming to admire Cat Winters as an author. She writes the unexpected and no plot is sacred because it will change on a dime. Her post war settings lend to such great themes in spiritualism, feminism, and post war acclimation back to society.

Well, this was a pleasant surprise - I mean super creepy surprise! Very atmospheric 1920s setting with a plucky & unreliable narrator making her way in a man‘s field - where the potential reincarnation stories of a young girl bring some folks together to work through their shit, tackle supernatural ideas & blow my/their socks off. Cat Winters is a master of keeping me wondering what is real, who might be crazy, and what forces are (maybe) at work.

TricksyTails From this cover, I would have never imagined that's what the book is about. Now you've got me interested! 6y

Day 9 #emojinov #☔️ I went with books from my stacks with umbrellas 🌂 or in some cases parasols ☂️on the cover for today's prompt. Here's six--there were more I found but when you collage more than six books, it's hard to see the covers well. I read all of these and enjoyed some much more than others. Interesting 'matchy-matchy' feel of the first two vertical pairs of covers. 🤔☔️🌂☂️

Mrsfrantz85 The paper magician looks so interesting! 6y

Seems like I just visited some of these for a recent post. I love cover art that displays subjects facing away -- mostly walking. And if I can match the image with a scene, that's the icing on the cake.

I really didn't know what to expect for this prompt. I was hoping for these type posts. But, being National Women's Month, it could have also had a deeper meaning relating to the struggle.

Lesliereads What a great collage of themed cover art - Bravo! 7y

#BookishConfession: I'm drawn to book covers that show the back view of a subject. Might be the idea of "walking away." Could be "going toward ..." It started with "A Cup of Tea," which, when I looked closely, shows the character facing forward. Maybe it's the silhouette for that one.
I've read "A Cup of Tea," "Balm," and "The Dispatcher."
"Yesternight" and "Lazarus" are next.

LauraBrook I have the same obsession with these covers too! Plus, if it's got a vintage photograph on the cover, I almost always automatically buy it. And yes, I'm richer in books than money. 😉 7y

Janie O'Daire, 7-Year-old math genius. With the memories of a Violet from Kansas & drowning at 19. With her professional reputation at stake as a rare female in the field, Alice pursues the puzzle. #AllHallowsRead #scaryread I loved my reread of We Have Always Lived in the Castle and listening to Coraline & The Night Sister on audio. Roses and Rot was excellent and I have read some great somewhat scary thrillers too, but for the perfect spooky atmosphere and an eerie paranormal plot, I am making Yesternight my pick for #favoritescarybook. Read it on a stormy night with a cup of tea and a blanket to combat the shivers.😱

This one took some turns I didn't really see coming. Interesting look at reincarnation and how the past lives of a few of the characters (not just the main one discussed in the synopsis) bled into their present and how that effected their lives in some frightening ways. It also dealt with the double standards educated women at the time faced. I ended up not really liking most of the characters, but still a good creepy read. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

My first book from this author but I'm sure not my last. Good spooky, tension-building historical mystery perfectly suited to read on a dark October night. Great creepy tone & atmosphere, interesting characters & reincarnation premise, plot twists-even a strange child & old hotel to add to the gothic feel.
