The Promise is a sequel to Potok‘s The Chosen, and it‘s just as thought-provoking & reflective. It follows Reuven Malter, a young Orthodox Jew in post-WWII NYC, during his time in seminary, as he struggles to define his faith in contrast to more conservative and more liberal sects within his community. I was fascinated by parallels to contemporary debates between fundamentalist/evangelical Christians & more progressive versions of Christianity.⤵️

BarbaraJean There‘s another thread to the plot that I was conflicted about—Reuven is caught up in helping a troubled boy, the son of a progressive Jewish scholar. The descriptions of and theory behind the treatment this boy receives feels very dated (granted, this was written in the 60s), and that whole thread felt a bit overwrought. But that aside, the ideas this explores are fascinating. I‘m wanting to go back and re-read The Chosen & then read this again! 2y

The past is never settled in this unsettling novel by Magda Szabo.
The murder of young Henriette in WWII has a lasting effect on all of the three families that had been peacefully living closely together in Budapest until the. Her death is symbolic for all that happens in the book during the war and the communist period afterwards. In their complicated attempts to save one another, the characters are just as likely to destroy one another. ⬇️

This is the second book in the Corfu Trilogy.

We meet the Durrell‘s again with their old and new friends.
From what I got from the dialogue at the beginning, which is hilarious by the way, this book is taking place at the same time as the first one, but includes stories Gerald forget to tell in the first book. The same hilarious writing as in the first one.

Beautiful Music | Michael Zadoorian

I finally got to start reading Michael Zadoorian‘s new book. I love that it started with memories of radio music from back in #1969. Zadoorian is so great with memories of the past. I think I‘ll like this journey back in time. 😊💕

This book! So devastating, brutal, sad ...also funny and a teensy bit hopeful. So it goes. I am mourning Vonnegut hard right now. Kurt, please come back!! But as every good Tralfamadorean knows he never left. He‘s still on my nightstand for whenever I need to visit him. After all, what‘s more Trafalmadorean than a book?
On a side note, I want Ethan Hawk to narrate everything I listen to from now on. 😍 #BirthdayChallenge #192019 #1969 @Marchpane
