The Left Hand of Darkness
The Left Hand of Darkness | Ursula K. Le Guin
Winner of the Hugo and Nebula AwardsA groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants can change their gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters. Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction.

#NewYearNewYou Day 23: Reviewed by Iphigene, this book is #WrittenIn1960s: “I was profoundly, utterly, incredibly dumbfounded by my first science fiction novel. It was not what I expected it to be. Scifi has always been one of my least favorite genres for the simple reason that I could not care for alien characters, civilizations or even a futuristic world. But LeGuin changed that for me.” Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-hpV

This book is a marvel of world building, I can see why it's so influential. The main character is deeply flawed. Misogynistic in a way that I have a hard time bearing even though I know that trait is being used to highlight the lessons he still has to learn about gender. This is a fascinating story but there's an emotional distance in it that I had a hard time traversing. I'm glad I read it but probably wouldn't choose to read again.

The book club picked this book and I would have e bailed on it if not for that. I know she was writing about a society that was genderless, however she primarily used the pronoun “he” or “him”. So all I saw were male characters.

My first #UrsulaKLeGuin was certainly an interesting experience 🤔. I loved the interesting view on sex and gender and Winter is a fascinating planet. However, I found it hard to get into the story and the book was confusing and boring at times. I was also really annoyed by the unlikable protagonist.
Are you Le Guin fans? Which books can you recommend?

Buechersuechtling I‘m completely at your side maybe years ago I tried to read the “Earthsea”-books but bailed after the first book. It was dull, a bit confusing and in my eyes lacked suspensive plot. So I can say: No more LeGuin for me. 🤭#UnpopularOpinion 2mo
LaLecture @Buechersuechtling I had similar problems with this one which is a shame since the idea behind the story was really interesting. I might try another Le Guin in the future, but probably not very soon 😅. 2mo

Three sci-fi novels, each considered a #masterpiece in Penguin's Galaxy Editions. The monochrome color & font design has grown on me, but I'm still annoyed by the upsidedown titles on the spine.

The luck that had turned in Ethwen now turned the world with it under my hand. I never had a gift but one, to know when the great wheel gives to a touch, to know and act. I had thought that foresight lost, last year in Erhenrang, and never to be regained. A great delight it was to feel that certainty again, to know that I could steer my fortune and the world's chance like a bobsled down the steep, dangerous hour.

Well I finished this this morning. My book group met on Sunday and discussed it, but I was a little bit behind. Having finished the book, I am now wondering if we read the same book because I had so many different opinions and thoughts about it! It was very good, and I would read it again.

we made tomato soup from my tomatoes that I grew in my garden last night, and my house still smells delicious.

Ursula Le Guin parachutes you straight into the world of Gethen with little by way of introduction. I floundered for a while, trying to get my head around the political intrigue as well as understanding the fantasy world. But there was enough to compel me until I gained sure footing. I read the second half of the novel in a couple of sittings, fully immersed in the journey across the ice.

A masterpiece! This novel of the Hainish recruitment of humanity as found in the Galaxy, deals with culture shock, gender identity, compassion and human decency. Written from various viewpoints, it is fully fleshed out and thoroughly riveting. Hugo award winner, and deservingly so. A must read for any fan of fiction or science fiction.

#BookMail Pt4 This is the 6th & final book in the #PenguinGalaxy series that I‘ve collected. With novels by William Gibson, Robert Heinlen & T.H.White, it‘s a beautiful little collection to have on your shelves. This one is Guins 1st full novel in her “Hainish Cycle”, it follows Genly Ai, a native of Terra who is sent to the planet Gethen as an envoy to bring them into the confederation of the Ekumen.

I stayed up too late reading this one, but it was worth it, I think. This book was written in 1969, and I do find myself curious to find out how contemporary readers find it, now that we have more vocabulary to talk about gender outside of the binary. I‘d heard Le Guin, herself, give an interview where she said she‘d have done things differently, particularly with pronouns. In any event, I thought the book was very good.
