Another series I'm rereading this year - absolutely LOVED the Swallows & Amazons books when I first read them, so I'm going through them again. This is the second book in the series, full of exploring, pirates, shipwrecks, mountain climbing, caves, and more! Every page was a delight.

Great Northern? | Arthur Ransome

Yesterday was a bittersweet day - I finished the Swallows & Amazons series! I read the first book back in 2019 and have taken my time reading the other 11 books, savoring every page. I LOVE this series! I think I'm going to start over and reread them all. Great Northern? did not disappoint - another delightful adventure with the entire gang. I wish there were another dozen of these books to read because I can't even express how much I've enjoyed ⬇

julieclair So glad you posted this. I have never heard of this series, but it sounds right up my alley. I‘ve added Swallows and Amazons to my TBR list. 👍 3y
SayersLover Yay! “Swallows and Amazons forever!” 🏴‍☠️ Ooh this is one of his I haven‘t read! I‘ll have to look for it. @TheAromaofBooks 3y

TheSpineView Great job! 3y
TheAromaofBooks @julieclair - I vaguely remember my dad reading Swallows & Amazons out loud to us as kids, but I went in basically blind when I read it a couple years ago. Since then, I've read a few books from the series a year and literally every single one has just been delightful, although it's made me a little discontent... I used to think I had a perfect childhood, until I realized my parents never let me sail & camp on a lake unsupervised for weeks! 😂 3y
TheAromaofBooks @SayersLover - This is the final book in the series and is fun because it in corporates so many of the characters from the earlier books. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! 3y
julieclair Sail and camp on a lake unsupervised for weeks? Well darn, there goes the perfect childhood I thought I had, too! 🤭 And I have obviously failed my children as well, by not providing them this opportunity. 😉 3y

Through a series of events, I ended up with TWO beautiful, hardcover editions of this book. I would genuinely love to send this copy on to someone - I hate to just chuck it in the giveaway box if there is someone here in Litsy Land who would like it!! Let me know if you are interested in having me send it your way!!

curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks i would be happy to give it a new home:) also happy to pay for the shipping:) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @curiouserandcurioser - Is your address in the #LitsyLove document accurate? As long as you don't mind it shipping media mail, I'm happy to send it to you at no cost. I know it's silly, but I'm scared if I send it to Goodwill, I will next see it on some horrifying YouTube video where they destroy beautiful old books to make some craft! 😂 3y
curiouserandcurioser @TheAromaofBooks i believe its accurate-i havent moved, so it should be:) i do not mind media mail at all-its so kind of you to send it to me!! Its not silly to feel that way -i would feel the same way, absolutely!! Thank you again for your kindness and generosity💜 3y
TheAromaofBooks The document has you living in Oak Harbor, so if that's correct, I will send it your way - north of me, as we're southeast of Columbus. 3y

I'm always excited to delve into another Swallows & Amazons adventure. Although this one definitely stretched credulity more than the others, it was still an entertaining read, even if it wasn't my new favorite or anything. Only two books left in this delightful series!

rockpools ❤️⛵️❤️ I have to agree, though, Missee Lee and Peter Duck are my two least favourite, possibly because they‘re that little bit more out-there! (Whereas a bunch of kids alone on an island with a sailing boat for the entire summer is TOTALLY realistic 😉) 3y
TheAromaofBooks @rockpools - Right?! When I read Peter Duck I was basically like, “Well that would never happen“ despite 100% being behind the other books where children disappear into the wilderness for days with no adult supervision 😂 I used to think I had a pretty good childhood until I read these books & got mad that my parents had never let me live on an island for the summer! 3y

Busy weekend & wasn't on Litsy much, but I finished two books!! This one was pretty fun, although not my favorite in the series, as I found it rather stressful at how everyone wrongly blamed the boys for casting off the boats. It seemed absurdly obvious who actually had the motive to do so, so I was continually aggravated at the adults in this story. I will say that the boys' actual parents believed & stuck up for them, which I liked. Overall, ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) it's still a fun little story - I don't know how Ransome writes such delightful characters & adventures.

I'll admit that it's a bit of a stretch for my #TBRDeckofCards @Clwojick but Shark?? What was I thinking?! 😂

Clwojick 🤣🦈🦈 Yeah! That‘s a hard one. I do have this one on my shelf though 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Clwojick - They catch a giant pike that describe as being “as big as a shark“ so I'm going with it 😂 This was a fun one, especially if you've read The Coot Club, since it takes place in the same area with a lot of the same characters. 4y

Decent week. I finished five books (including 1984, which wasn't in the plan haha) I read about 100 pages of The Covered Wagon (published 1922). I'd hoped to find a story of life on the Oregon Trail, but this was honestly just a soap opera set among the covered wagons, with two dashing young men (one upright & honest, the other underhanded & dastardly) competing for the love of young & beautiful Molly (whose mother is also named Molly & the ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) author rarely bothered to tell me which Molly he was talking about at any given paragraph). I just couldn't deal with the drama any more. Into the giveaway box!!

I'm really enjoying my chapter-a-day of Harry Potter & Mansfield Park (quite the contrast) & also (not pictured) a travel guide for Vietnam. Currently about halfway through the tagged book - another delightful addition to the Swallows & Amazons series.

LitStephanie May I recommend A Sudden Journey by Karen Fisher? It is a realistic, not romanticized, novel about a woman travelling with her husband and kids and a laudinum addicted man who has been devastated by losing his family. It was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner award. Gives some great insight into what life was like in that place and time. 4y
TheAromaofBooks @vlwelser - Right!? This is just the “very near the top of the TBR“ shelf... so maybe I just need to be less ambitious! 😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Cinfhen - It honestly was - just soooo melodramatic. I gave up on the chapter when Molly was just hanging out, daydreaming about the boyz & the sees a wildfire coming... & tries to send a SMOKE SIGNAL to warn everyone... like honey, if they can see your smoke signals, they can probably see that a wildFIRE is on the way! 😂 I just couldn't deal any more!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @LitStephanie - Thank you!! I'll check it out!! 4y
marleed @TheAromaofBooks Haha - a smoke signal to warn of wildfires! 4y
Cinfhen Hahaha 🤣 how did this book get published?!?!??! 4y
TheAromaofBooks @marleed @Cinfhen - Right?? I was like were there no editors in 1922?!?! 4y
LitStephanie @TheAromaofBooks that is hilarious! 4y

Back at my place now and finished Secret Water on my balony. It is a very nice story and I would say very appealing to kids. Some passages inbetween are quite dragging and could‘ve been shorter and more entertaining, but overall a beautiful adventure-explorer story.

I absolutely loved this book, just as I have ever book in this series so far. So jealous of these adventures! My parents never abandoned me on an island with a sailboat so I could map out unexplored territory with my siblings!!!

Also so much love for the Jonathan Cape editions and their spectacular end paper maps!

meghathecloud That is something to be jealous about😂 4y
TheAromaofBooks @meghathecloud - Right?? 😂 I had an awesome childhood with loads of outdoor free time where I was just shoved out the door & told to entertain myself for the day, but not at this level - every book has another just fantastic way that they have some delightfully independent adventure, yet their parents never feel neglectful or uncaring. I can't believe I didn't read these growing up; I've loved every book in the series so far. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick How DARE they not abandon you on an island with nothing but your siblings and a sailboat. For shame! 🤣🤣🤣 4y
TheAromaofBooks @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick - Honestly, it's like they didn't even love me! 😂 4y
