Amadis of Gaul | Garci Rodriguez De Montalvo
post image

I‘ve spent several hours the last few days listening to Amadis of Gaul, and I‘m halfway through. I‘ll admit that I‘m not always completely focused on the story, but I do recognize all the main characters now and a lot of the action is repetitive. It‘s clear by now Amadis is the best and his love of Oriana is the strongest and most pure. Still 2 more books to go . . .

Daisey ?: I listened while doing some farm work (disassembling parts of a corn head that went through a fire), walking with Lúthien, driving, and snuggling LaGata this evening.

Published in 1957, this reads as an immediate view of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and flight of refugees. It‘s also completely a 1950s warning against communism. I was very much invested in the stories of these people who fought for and then fled their homeland.

🎧 I listened to the audio (a few hours while disking today) and found it bearable but not great.

Texreader Excellent book. And tough work today!! 8mo
Daisey @Texreader Agree about the book, but as for the work, this was the easiest job of the day and only one with AC. Plus, I got to listen to my book. 8mo

I‘m trying something new today! Although I‘ve known burdock a long time, I finally took the time to dig up some roots.

I‘ve perused this book multiple times over the last few years without reviewing it. I haven‘t compared it carefully to other references, but I find it to be a useful book. It doesn‘t include recipes other than some basic suggestions, but it seems a good starting point for identification and ideas.

Tamra The burdock looks a bit like Stick Man, a favorite. 😊 8mo
Daisey @Tamra 😂 It does! 8mo
SamAnne This is an invasive on my property! I‘ve done a few things with it but not much. 8mo
Daisey @SamAnne I believe it! We moved the cattle away from this property for a few years and it‘s gone a bit crazy; which meant it was in places easier to dig than before. I don‘t know that I‘ll do much with it either, but it was interesting to try. 8mo

This was an enjoyable and entertaining listen. I cringed for Molly through many events in the first half and agree with some reviewers that the second half went a bit too quickly. I appreciated the found family aspect. I‘m still a bit torn on the epilogue, but the story kept me intrigued.

📷: I listened while I watered sweet corn, picked blackberries, and wandered through the woods with Luthien. #BooksOnTheFarm

dabbe Hello, Lovable Luthien! 🖤🐾🖤 8mo
Daisey @dabbe Farm work has slowed down a bit which means I‘ve had time to take her out almost daily for long rambling walks, and she‘s been loving it! 8mo
dabbe @Daisey I bet she does! 🤣🤣😍 8mo

This was a fun story, but I don‘t think it will be particularly memorable. I wasn‘t expecting the whole story to take place in Scotland, but I definitely enjoyed the Scottish setting. It didn‘t hold a lot of suspense for me; I always felt things were going to work out for David, no matter the difficulties along the way.

📷: I finished listening while watering the sweet corn patch and observing the bees.

This was a fantastic summer read! I connected early with the description of drought and joy in rain. Then it went on with stories of family farm life and fair days that made me smile. I loved Garnet‘s spirit and wonderful family. Everything works out perfectly, but sometimes this kind of read is just an enjoyable comfort, even if it‘s not quite believable.

Daisey 📷: I finished listening while disking today, but I thought the chickens were more fun to share and fitting for the story than my view from the tractor. (edited) 9mo

Daisey @TheBookHippie Yes, so much. I also did a bit of perusing on Goodreads last night and realized I had read another book by this author as a kid never realizing it was part of a series. Thanks for reintroducing her to me. 9mo
Daisey @Bklover Thanks! My aunt and uncle have this group of incredibly friendly chickens right now, so I couldn‘t help snapping a few close up photos the other day. 9mo
TheBookHippie @Daisey oh how fun!!! I love it when that happens ! 9mo
Roary47 The chickens are soooo cute! 😍🥰💛 9mo
tpixie @Daisey where did you get the audiobook? 🐔 9mo
Daisey @tpixie I managed to find it through one of my libraries on Libby. 9mo
tpixie @Daisey lucky! None of my four Libby libraries has it! 9mo

This is a fairly short book, but it took me most of this week to listen during short bits of time when I was working alone. This included while disking & getting the baler ready to bale more straw. #BooksOnTheFarm

The story was darkly humorous due to the eclectic mix of characters, but also very pessimistic about the fate of the world. I found the plot interesting and enjoyed it more than Slaughterhouse-Five.

Daisey @BarbaraBB There are definitely long, hard days. It‘s always interesting work, though. Thanks! 9mo

I spent quite a bit of time listening to the rest of this book while doing random farm jobs the last few days. The story turned out not to be what I was expecting, but I was always curious to know what would happen. I definitely expected more of a journey across Australia in a 20 hour audiobook, but that‘s only a small piece. This is much more a story of some truly unique characters.

Daisey @Texreader @Catsandbooks I chose this book for #FoodAndLit, but I‘m not doing so well with the food part this year.

Crazeedi You have a big job there, much administration 💖 9mo
Daisey @BarbaraBB It didn‘t quite live up to my expectations, but the characters were fascinating. 9mo
Daisey @Texreader @Crazeedi Thanks! I just do summer work, not the decision making, but helping is such a great change from my regular school work. 9mo

The last few days have included plenty of farm work. I haven‘t gotten much reading done, but I‘ve fit in a few hours of listening to Oscar & Lucinda while working and taking a walk with Luthien. I‘m a good ways into this story now, although they haven‘t met yet, and I‘m still not quite sure what I think.

It‘s that time of year again where I spend a good amount of time working on the family farm. This afternoon I fit in a few more letters of #Clarissa while filling the overhead bin. I‘ve made it to Volume 5. Just a few pages or letters at a time is still my preferred way to read this, so the little bit of time worked perfectly.

Daisey @Currey Thanks! It‘s one of the things about this job I really appreciate, that I can usually sneak in almost a half hour of actual print reading while still doing my job of monitoring everything, as long as it‘s running smoothly. 10mo
