Illywhacker | Peter Carey
post image

My belated #weirdwords entry is courtesy of the tagged book, which I haven't read but I intend to. According to Ye Olde Google: Illywhacker is “A small-time confidence-trickster or seller of trinkets.“ The con man description does seem very much of the moment.
Carey has yet to disappoint as as writer. I read Oscar & Lucinda shortly after joining Litsy & I STILL think about that book. Another fave is True History of the Kelly Gang.
@cbee

vivastory *One of my favorite signed book anecdotes is that while I was reading my copy of O&L (i Bought it on a discount shelf at HPB & it had a a movie tie-tin cover), I happened to notice that ir was signed by Carey! Someone had the nerve to take a movie tie-in cover & request an autograph (it was a good movie, but STILL) lololol I would just die of embarrassment personally lol, but again that's me 😃 (edited) 9h
CBee Such a funny word, I love it! And love your anecdote - I think I feel the same! Sort of sad that I haven‘t been to many book signings though 😂🤦‍♀️😅 5h

Did any of you know where the REAL Starbuck's logo came from? See above pic; the one on the right is what the logo was based on. Wonder if Starbucks knew that these ladies were brutal sociopaths who murder people by being attractive and singing their alluring song? Oh wait, they probably did. That's why we all are lulled into buying a $15 cup of joe! 🤣

CBee Squeeeeee I love ANYTHING mythology related!!! 3d

A Ghanaian concept, the word is expanded into the proverb “se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi.”

Sankofa is the understanding that only by knowing your (personal, cultural, national) history can you know your current self, and know how to become better.

The concept feels particularly relevant right now.

#WeirdWordWednesday #WeirdWords

shortsarahrose I‘ve heard this used in meditation practices before. Like you pick something you want to get out of your practice as a sankofa, say it a few times, and then let it go. 3d
CBee I always love the words you post! 3d

This isn‘t the meaning I expected when looking up this word (stumbled upon recently when reading the AMAZING All the Sinners Bleed). But it‘s cool nonetheless! #weirdwordwednesday #weirdwords

CatLass007 This is a great word! I‘ve read it before so I knew what it meant in the context of the words around it. I‘m too lazy to look it up in a dictionary though. Thanks for sharing this amazing word, you amazing woman! 3d
BookmarkTavern What a timely word! 😂 3d
dabbe You always pick the best ones to say out loud! And extremely prescient as well. 😍 3d
CBee @BookmarkTavern I thought the exact same thing 😂🤦‍♀️ 3d
CBee @peanutnine I can see that! 😂 3d
CBee @dabbe thank you! 😊 3d
CBee @CatLass007 you‘re very welcome, fellow amazing woman 😊 3d
CatLass007 I just did something that I said I don‘t do because of laziness. I looked up the definition of the word “febrile.” It was just used in the book Conclave describing a “new and febrile mood.” It can mean either feverish or nervous excitement or energy. From the context, I believe it is intended to mean nervous excitement or energy. You have inspired me to start looking up the definitions of words! 3d
CBee @CatLass007 I know that word from my nursing school days. I‘m glad I inspired you to look it up 😊👏🏻 2d

My lilacs are blooming, my hydrangeas are up. And the roses are budding! I am so ready for spring.

This word also has a chemistry related definition, used to describe the process of a substance loosing moisture and turning into a fine powder, but I like the first one better.

#WeirdWordWednesday #WeirdWords

CBee I like the first one better, too. Because flowers ♥️ 1w

I‘m enjoying this book SO very much, and have already learned quite a bit. That being said, here is my #weirdwordwednesday choice: agouti. I‘m referring to the coloration, but an agouti is also a type of wild rodent (where the name for the coloration came from). Here‘s a Wiki: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agouti_(coloration)
