Another book finished in the hammock this evening! This book‘s taken me a long time to read, partly because I haven‘t had much print reading time and partly because it wasn‘t that compelling. I enjoyed it but never felt I just had to keep reading. Ben Sippy is a dime novelist from Philadelphia who decides to actually see the Wild West he‘s written about. He befriends the boy who will become Billy the Kid and tells his version of the story.
Luthien joined me in the hammock this morning as I finished this short novel. It provides an interesting glimpse of some important moments in Scottish history, but what I loved were the descriptions of the island and the focus on language as John learns to communicate with Ivar.

It was a beautiful evening, so I spent a bit of time in the hammock in the back yard with Gandalf and my current audiobook. Mr. Pip is set in Papua New Guinea and includes the only white man remaining on the island reading Great Expectations to students in the local school.

This was a great middle grade story about learning to deal with tough things and learning from your own mistakes. It‘s about learning to cope, to communicate, and consider others. It‘s about that point in life when you realize your parents are just people too, and sometimes they make big mistakes. It‘s also very much about softball and love of the game. 🥎

Since school‘s started again, it‘s harder to stay caught up with reading. This evening I decided to make a little time for hammock reading, but Luthien is also demanding attention. I‘ve made it to “The Council of Elrond.” I love this chapter and the history, but it‘s another one that can be overwhelming on a first read. Don‘t stress over keeping track of all the names and details at this point.

A mid-day rain shower sent me home early so I could finish the first chapter of The Hobbit before this evening. Gandalf curled up in the hammock with me while I read.
This first chapter introduces most of our main characters and includes some Dwarvish music. I enjoyed every part of it from the famous first line to all the food and chaos to the poetry at the end. Bilbo has no idea what he‘s in for!

I finished this middle grade book about homelessness and family yesterday evening during some hammock reading time with Luthien. It was straightforward about many of the difficulties and focused specifically on a Native American family. Yet, in the end, it worked out well with a lot of hope for a better future, honestly more than I expected from all of the story leading up to that point.

It‘s been a lovely week for some hammock reading.

Lois Ruby is coming to our school for an author visit tomorrow, so I finished Red Menace today. It‘s a historical fiction about a Jewish family in Kansas in 1953. Marty just wants to focus on baseball, but his family is being watched by the FBI and his mom is under pressure at her university job. They follow the Rosenberg court case closely, and Marty sees the impact of being a soldier in Korea on his neighbor.
