Chronicles | Bob Dylan
post image

There's no right or wrong answer necessarily, lol, so what are your thoughts on Bob Dylan being 2016's recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature?

CallMeIshmael Actually I think it's pretty cool, writing is writing and he writes a hell of a song 8y
Laura317 Seems odd to me to have a songwriter win, but I'm cool with it. 8y
Yournewfriendsams I don't mind his winning despite it being a little random. He's had a long relationship with the literary world and authors. His songs really are poetry. 8y

LauraBeth Bob Dylan is one of my favorite songwriters - I think listening to Tangled Up In Blue during a sad season in my life propelled me forward 😀 so for that reason alone I'll allow it ❤️ 8y
ApoptyGina69 I've always classified him as a poet because I do like and appreciate that part of his work and his musicianship, but I don't care for his voice. Still, I feel like the win was out of left field. 8y
the_hibernator Ambivalent. I was disappointed that it was a singer, but music is a form of poetry. 8y
Mlfoley012 I thinks it awesome. The ability to touch someone thru words is what it's all about. 8y
Mlfoley012 @LauraBeth one of my all time favorite songs 8y
[DELETED] 3323341091 his songs are poetry set to music, so in that regard, it does not seem like his winning is out of place. the other aspect to consider is the impact his work has had globally, across multiple art forms. much literature, poetry, music, political and social movements have borrowed or been influenced by Dylan. 8y
Redheadrambles @fern well put and i agree 100% . There are some good articles floating around about why he deserves it. I just think it takes a while to adjust to the idea and can understand that some feel it a missed opportunity for other deserving authors. 8y
cariashley 😐 8y
ReadingEnvy I just wish there was a time frame of sorts. Most awards are given based on the work within a year or to a most recent work but this felt like a lifetime recognition. No discounting his contributions, just confused on the parameters. 8y
quirkyreader Because of mum and dad I grew up with "folkies". Peter, Paul, and Mary do great justice to his songs. Read "Blood On The Tracks" as poetry. ?? 8y
Kirstin I found it an odd choice but I'm such a hardcore Dylan fan, and I love his words so much, that I'm good with him winning. 👍🎉🙌 8y
Leslie It's is a prize for half of what he does. Writers do what he does without the tool of music. I love Dylan-have taught him-but still feel weird. Toni Morrison is our last laureate. How do you compare them? 8y
silverlocusts I am a Comparatist, and we often tend to view a lot of things as "literature" that others do not. One of my profs, well-known and respected in the field, had the class watch The Wire. In my opinion, music doesn't lie outside of the literature umbrella, and it is cool to see the definition interpreted creatively, but I agree that maybe the exact parameters of the award were maybe also creatively applied. 8y
OrangeMooseReads Slightly mixed feelings. As a Dylan fan I love his lyrics and there is a lot of poetry in them. It takes talent to write the lyrics the way that he does and with the feelings that he does. As a literature fan I feel like it was a bit of a stretch in giving Dylan the literature prize. I feel like there has to be someone in the literary world that would be better deserving of this prize. 8y
Marchpane What was Alfred Nobel's intent in bequeathing the prize? Writing his will in the 19th century, he chose categories (peace, physics, medicine, literature) that he thought would have greatest positive impact on humanity. He could not have foreseen the rise of popular music, films, TV and their influence. So I am in favour of a broad interpretation of 'literature'. 8y
katedensen I'm a huge Dylan fan and think it's well deserved. I understand the argument against his win, and I would encourage those people to listen to "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands." That said, I strongly agree with @silverlocusts and @Marchpane. 8y
BethFishReads 💕💕💕💕💕💕 But I'm a fan & I'm old 😀😀😀 8y
Victoria_C @Marchpane 👏👏👏 8y
SiriGuruDevSingh He's a great writer, I really enjoy his books! No problem with it whatsoever💗 8y
Notafraidofwords Junot Diaz made a good argument yesterday where he spoke about how much we bend the rules for certain things. I think it's interesting. 8y
SiriGuruDevSingh Why do I feel like a lot of people don't even know he wrote books as well as songs...? And... Didn't he win for his recent book that also included lyrics/poems? 8y
silverlocusts @Marchpane such a good point. I don't know many literature syllabi for survey or post-1900s subjects that don't include something from film or music or TV. 8y
audiothing Future generations will be studying his work and learning a great deal of American and world social history. He deserves this as much as anyone. Also it's good to have someone win who is speaking for the people, not some high faultin' literary speak that Everyman has a problem understanding. Judges did good for the world 8y
MrBook @SiriGuruDevSingh Regardinf other awards, I think so, but not certain. 8y
LitsyGoesPostal 👍🏻 8y
moranadatter I don't feel I know enough to have an opinion one way or the other and I lack the interest to learn more in this case. It seems a bit gross to me to learn about something just so I can determine if someone is worthy of an award or not. 8y
MrBook @kmdartist Ditto that! 8y
jojoandthemoon Definitely deserved. Dylan defies categories. (But if one hasn't fell into his rabbit hole, I understand the need to oppose it.) Did you catch "Chronicles" is not as straight forward as it seems? It's quite a labyrinth... ?❤️ 8y
acorter I suppose I'll be the contrarian here. I tend to agree with Jodi Picoult's tweet, "I‘m happy for Bob Dylan, #ButDoesThisMeanICanWinAGrammy?" 8y
