Royal Affair | Cristiane Serruya
post image

If you've been following the Cristiane Serruya debacle (#copypastecris) you know that she got caught blatantly plagiarizing *many* powerhouse romance authors, including Nora Freaking Roberts. Nora's clapback: "Here‘s a warning for anyone who‘s stolen any of my work and claimed it as his/her own. I‘m coming for you." ??

NR's full blog post on it: http://fallintothestory.com/plagiarism-then-and-now/

rather_be_reading wow!! thx for posting! 6y
margreads When La Nora speaks romanceland listens. I'm glad she's spoken out. 6y
Bookzombie This is so crazy. I‘m also shocked about Janet Dailey. I remember my mom reading her books. 6y

Suet624 Thanks for the link. 6y
Crazeedi @Bookzombie what about Janet daily, don't know ? I don't read these authors but the whole thing is nuts. What a shame! 6y
swishandflick @Crazeedi The blog post also talks about a 1997 incident where Janet plagiarized Nora, who ended up suing her. 6y
Crazeedi @swishandflick wow, and she's a well know author, and she would do that to Nora? Nuts 6y
Bookzombie @Crazeedi Janet Dailey was a well known author. She has passed away. I was just surprised that such a successful author would also plagiarize. @swishandflick Thanks! 6y
Crazeedi @Bookzombie I'm sorry I didnt know that🙄 6y
Bookzombie @Crazeedi It‘s okay. I‘m sorry if I implied you should know. I didn‘t mean to offend. 6y
Crazeedi @Bookzombie no offense taken! I just felt bad I didn't know! 6y

I wanted to read Tomi Adeyemi‘s book but then she accused Nora Roberts of plagiarizing her title & half-assed the apology & pretty much stood by while her fans attacked NR. NR was one of the authors plagiarized in the #CopyPasteCris fiasco, her response is “I will burn your crops & salt the earth”. TA is lucky this isn‘t the response she received. http://fallintothestory.com/plagiarism-then-and-now/ Don‘t mess with NR, or Romancelandia.

esurient I have a hard time separating a book from its author, and I haven't been able to open up the Adeyemi book yet either. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @esurient Instead of tweeting TA should have talked to her agent/publisher/someone with more knowledge because the covers don‘t look anything alike and NR‘s is from a series started before TA‘s book. Also, did no one pay attention to #cockygate and that you can‘t copywrite titles? 6y
esurient I can understand how the kerfuffle started: with a lack of separation between the professional and personal use of social media to engage with fans. An author gripes to a friendly base, 'Ugh, another book is coming out with my same title!'; and that's fair enough. But when Adeyemi learned that her plagerism accusation was wrong, she had a professional responsibility to stop the snowball effect... which she maybe barely tried to do, a bit. 6y

esurient My disappointment over Adeyemi's response is lingering much longer than my irritation over her original inaccurate statements. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @esurient That‘s how I feel about it too. I‘m also super annoyed by all the people who have been dismissive of NR, like she doesn‘t matter. Good luck having her career is all I can think. 6y
esurient Ugh, yes. 6y

Welp. The plot thickens. It looks like #CopyPasteCris had some of the books plagiarized tucked in with books on writing. There‘s photographic evidence from an interview with the NYT. She wants to blame it on a ghost writer but a couple have come forward and said she‘d offered them work that was going to be extending/fixing/whatever she had already written.

LibrarianRyan There was also an article in the la times but it didn‘t have any new info. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Milan has posted a note from the editor of the book on her blog. I feel bad for the editor because they were starting their editing business and had to turn it around quickly - and given everything that happened I wouldn‘t be surprised if it was to keep them from recognizing passages they might have read because they read romance. 6y

It continues. Now #CopyPasteCris is claiming it‘s the fault of her ghostwriter(s) but another ghostwriter has stepped up and said that when they worked for #CopyPasteCris they were given material they assumed was the author‘s and told to make it more complete. And they also weren‘t paid, which appears to be a real problem for ghostwriters (as well as underpayment). There are updates from Courtney Milan and several other people.

DGRachel Does this happen in other genres? To quote Supernatural‘s musical episode “there‘s too much drama in the drama department!” 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel There have been various plagiarism charges over the years in over genres (including some journalists) and other genres have their own blow ups - there have been some things in YA, I think. I follow a lot of romance writers because they‘re fun to follow so I end up seeing a lot this sort of thing. KU doesn‘t help because people think romance is easy so they cobble together stuff and get click farms and game the system. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel There‘s an article under one of my other posts about an author who lied about having terminal cancer, that‘s not in the romance genre. I think that sort of thing has popped up quite a bit the last few years. Most of the nastiness I see about #ownvoices tends to be in YA and scifi/fantasy - although it does show up in romance discussions. 6y

jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel I think it depends on who or what you follow because I think there‘s a lot of “stuff” happening that doesn‘t make it outside of a community. 6y
DGRachel Interesting. I follow a bunch of authors but I don‘t spend a lot of time on Twitter so I miss a lot of drama, apparently. 😂 I think I usually only hear about things when you post about it. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel Not all authors get into this sort of thing. And, as @LibrarianRyan pointed out elsewhere, this looks to have some ties to some of the KU scamming that happens. It‘s unfortunate because that ultimately hurts readers. This is bringing up some of the discussion around ghostwriters, and apparently that‘s another whole mess of basically people writing entire books for almost nothing and being take advantage of. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel I‘m also obsessed with Twitter. 6y
DGRachel Yeah, I had no idea of all the bad stuff that happens with KU. That was insane when I saw some of it. I appreciate your Twitter obsession-I get the best gossip without having to sort through ALL of it. 😂😂😘 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel I didn‘t know about KU until #cockygate but I wasn‘t totally surprised because I‘d stumbled across books I now know were stuffed with extra content to game the system. I try to weed through all the drama to get at the parts that effect readers the most. There are so many great authors to read that I figure why not be able to weed a few out? 6y
DGRachel I saw that they‘ve identified at least 23 authors and 26 books so far that this Christiane person plagiarized. 😱 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel Yes. I have the list. There‘s also some speculation that she‘s using a pen name - all her social media and website have been taken down. 6y
DGRachel This is when I wish a Litsy would let us comment with gifs because I know there‘s a good one out there with someone eating popcorn 🍿 and that‘s totally how I feel at the moment. 😂 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @DGRachel Oh that would be great! 6y

The person who plagiarized Courtney Milan‘s Book has submitted the plagiarized work for a RITA - AND she‘s apparently in plagiarized something of Tessa Dare. Romancelandia is gonna burn it all down!

julesG WTF???? 6y
LibrarianRyan Links please! I must read. 6y

jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan It‘s all over Twitter, let me see what I can find. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @julesG @Marilyncjackson Yup, it has happened. 6y
julesG Add the AJ Finn story, and I'm seriously wondering what's going on in the world of publishing. When I worked at uni, I had to check every piece of student writing. Heck, I checked my own writing before using it for classes. AJ Finn story: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/14/books/dan-mallory-woman-window-denzil.html 6y
Marilyncjackson Ok I want to know more! I read the AJ Finn thing that‘s crazy too. But I want to know more about this plagiarism thing. Do you have links? 6y
LibrarianRyan I‘ll check out twitter when I get off work. Little access here. 6y
LibrarianRyan That was interesting reading. And it‘s also interesting how it connects back to KU just like the last big romance scandal. @julesg 6y
CoffeeK8 I just read about this on #SBTB it‘s crazy! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @julesG @LibrarianRyan That‘s the hashtag that‘s being used on Twitter and you should be able find information through Courtney Milan‘s tweets. @Marilyncjackson Do you use Twitter? 6y
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan yeah. Used the last few power bars on my personal laptop to get caught up. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Yes, there does appear to be a KU element this time. It sucks because there‘s some good stuff on KU and I worry that‘s going to hurt KU overall. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @esurient Thank you! @Marilyncjackson Check out the blog post that @esurient has shared in this discussion. 6y
esurient @Marilyncjackson @jpmcwisemorgan So sorry; I forgot about the need to tag in comments. 6y
