For the true crime fans out there, this is a nasty one. Torsos wash up on the river bank in Cleveland, OH not long after games law man Elliot Ness is hired to clean up the city's corrupt police force. If you don't know the story, the final reveal is a twisted one. The artist actually used some real photographs from the case file to fill in some backgrounds. A very unique GN.
This was my pick for March‘s #ReadSpooky2023 prompt of true crime. From 1935 - 1938 there was a serial killer dismembering people in Cleveland, Ohio. Sometimes called the Cleveland Torso Murderer or the Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, this graphic novel covers the investigation, including Eliot Ness, who was Safety Director at the time. This was interesting and I thought the use of real photos and documents added depth. #truecrime ⬇️
This graphic novel was really enjoyable. The story in itself is interesting, but what I had never seen before, was the artists using original documents and photos to help illustrate the book. I thought it was creative and the story was well told.
This book was incredibly interesting.
I do think the title is misplaced; it features Ness‘ hunt for the Butcher, but the book focuses on Ness‘ life after Chicago and the work he did in Cleveland.
Ness had a modern idea of what policy should be and his aspirations are what we should seek police to be today.
