Less fun to read than other animal books I‘ve read before but nonetheless a fascinating read!

Intriguing story of a young medical student arriving in Paris to study anatomy in 1815. He meets a woman and her daughter who navigate the underworld of thieves, spies, Darwinian evolution theory, and napoleon‘s exile. A LOT going on and at times even a reader‘s suspension of disbelief is unable to make this a solid winner.

Don‘t read this book unless lots of animal death and racism don‘t bother you and you‘re just super into Victorian science. I‘m Brooke H on Goodreads if you want to read my full review. (And yes, I did read this entire book to prep for a trip to the Galapagos. Of which there was one chapter. So.)

#BasedOnTrueStory Spent my birthday exploring nearby Dayton Tennessee, site of the famous trial which found John T. Scopes guilty of illegally teaching evolution in 1925. A cautionary tale where too much sounds too familiar today. Drove by the courthouse and found this charming shop (Pizza, Books, & Ice Cream). #Aboutabook @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

Eggs Lovely photos! A few years back I attended the play performed in a county courthouse - so amazing 2mo

77/150 I think the title was misleading. The author does do a good job of keeping the science simple, while discussing heady topics like cosmology, astrophysics, plate tectonics, geological history and the origins of mankind. I did find the author's attempts at humor kind of heavy handed, but I understand not wanting to make the science too heavy and dull. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

My choice for tonight's #Fridaynightshare is without doubt The Voyage of the Beagle, Charles Darwin exhilarating record of his travels as a young man, that sowed the idea of evolutionary change. This experience, this journey had a life-changing effect on his direction in life.
I have lost count the number of times I have reached for this book. It brings me great comfort and joy.
