Mehso-so

Hamid‘s books are always a hit or miss for me and this one clearly was a miss. I couldn‘t connect to the style of the writing, the endless meandering sentences. And I did not really get the meaning of the book.
A man wakes up and his skin has turned dark and then all pale people turn dark. An interesting starting point for what could have been a poignant novel, but it felt detached and it didn‘t touch me the way it could have.

vivastory Too bad it didn't work for you. I have read only one Hamid book, which I did like: Exit West. Were you at the theater today? 1y
squirrelbrain Hmmm, I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews for this. At least I‘m not planning on buying it, but I‘ll have a think about whether I actually want to read it…. Thanks for tagging me! 1y
sarahbarnes Thanks for your review of this one. I‘ve been on the fence about reading it and this makes me think I might hold off. 1y

BarbaraBB @vivastory I liked Exit West too and The Reluctant Fundamentalist. I was at the movie theater. There was an international documentary festival, very interesting! 1y
BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @sarahbarnes I read some raving reviews too so it might just be me but it really did nothing for me! 1y
Megabooks Yes, yes, yes to that second paragraph! Great review! I wanted to love this but couldn‘t connect. 1y
Megabooks Also, I‘d love to go to an international documentary film fest with you! #FriendGoals 💜 1y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I even found it hard to concentrate, imagine! And YES 🙌🏽 to #friendgoals ❤️ 1y

Northanger Abbey | Jane Austen

Chapters 4 & 5! Turns out the Allens have an acquaintance in Bath after all- Mrs. Thorpe, an old friend of Mrs. A's! She presents her favorite daughter and also her two other daughters, and Catherine gets a friend crush FAST. She and Isabella become instant BFFs, calling each other by their first names and reading novels together (tbh this is #friendgoals). Here Jane launches into a passionate defense of novels and it is scathing and glorious.

AnneCecilie I love Austen‘s defense for reading. Not that we need any, but good to have hero our side 😊 1y

Samplergal ❤️❤️❤️😂😂😂. Last week in Mexico, I lived with substandard coffee. I am not snobby about anything except coffee. It was a long week. I‘m glad to be back with my “friends”. 5y

"There weren't many people in this world who would let you be vulnerable and still believe you were strong."

❤️ #friendgoals

Caterina This is what my SO does for me; every time I'm vulnerable and think I'm weak, he believes me to be strong. ❤️ 7y
MarriedtoMrT @Caterina Everyone needs someone like this! And hopefully more than one someone. We need to be able to be safely vulnerable in order to grow. I'm glad you have someone! My SO does the same as well. 7y
Abby-J I think vulnerability is one of the greatest things about Veronica Mars as a character. I think so many writers of both books and television think that removing vulnerability from female characters is what makes them strong, but what makes any of us strong our ability to acknowledge our vulnerabilities and power on through our day today lives, or even solve mysteries, despite them. 7y
MarriedtoMrT @Abby-J I agree - both about the portrayal of "strong" women as well as your assessment of Veronica. I felt her vulnerability more in the book than I did during the show because I could be in her head from beginning to end of a uncertain interaction. At first I was a bit surprised but then, dear God, knowing all she has gone through in the past I was surprised I ever thought she could not be concerned going into certain situations and... 7y
MarriedtoMrT She does it anyway because she thinks it is the right thing to do. 7y
