Pickpick

“Ahead of her time, she challenged a patriarchal system & a doctor-dominated world, compelling both to be better & fairer. She did it all alone, bolstered only by her belief that she was right, in a world that continually told her she was wrong. She fought every day of her life to make things better, dedicating her life to others, wanting justice for all.” Finally finished this #shesaid selection. So good, nonfiction that doesn‘t read like NF.

ncsufoxes The obstacles Elizabeth faced back then are some of the same that women face today. The stigmas of mental health & women being lessened are still all very prevalent today, sadly. Elizabeth was an inspiring woman that fought the system even when the odds were insurmountable. It‘s amazing what she accomplished at a time when society was so against her. #Fthepatriarchy 6d

ChaoticMissAdventures I really enjoyed this one. I thought the writing and research was well done and the entire book highly readable. She was an amazing woman. 6d

Saving Five | Amanda Nguyen

Pickpick

“In America‘s criminal justice system, survivors become background characters to a story that is actually about us-our lives, our bodies, our dignity…Victims are erased from their own narratives.” Nguyen‘s story is about how she fought to make sure that women‘s rape kits are not thrown away while women take the time to decide if they want to pursue justice. She talks about the odds stacked against women to get convictions against their rapist. She

ncsufoxes highlights the insurmountable odds to getting a bill passed. The odds are stacked against women in the legal & legislative system (99% failure rate for both). There needs to be better laws for women to pursue justice. The loopholes need to be shut. #believewomen #fthepatriarchy #antifabookclub 1mo

"I toyed with the idea of telling him Jesus had probably been born in March and the Christian church had piggybacked their festival on the existing Yule traditions....We had enough melodrama without adding an unstable vicar into the mix and besides, little flecks of foam were collecting at the corners of his mouth." Max! I love her! ? #chroniclesofstmarys

Crinoline_Laphroaig "The Reverend Lillywhite – whom I was really coming to dislike – abandoned paganism and prepared to mount what was obviously his other hobbyhorse – that women were not equipped to understand the law and how it worked." #fthepatriarchy 5y

I‘ve been listening to a podcast interview with the author of this book. It‘s quite fascinating, and I‘ll be reading her book soon, I think. It‘s a different, but connected, take on systemic misogyny. She‘s brilliant! Podcast link below ⬇️

Can we all just agree that it's super not ok to refer to women by their first name while simultaneously referring to men by their last names if you don't personally know the woman? Which, considering she died in 1944, I doubt you did?! (Aimee Semple McPherson is just Aimee, meanwhile William Seymour is consistently referred to by his last name.) #FthePatriarchy

BookishFeminist This drives me nuts. Either use last names for both, first names for both, or their initials for both. 9y
Shmemilina @BookishFeminist Agreed! It's just so disrespectful! 9y
