#AyUpAugust #IPredictARiot It was time for the 1968 democratic convention in Chicago.Johnson wouldn‘t run , Bobby Kennedy had been killed , & Vietnam protestors wanted to make a statement. So did the city of Chicago.8 of the brightest of the counterculture were indicted for involvement, including Tom Hayden,Abbie Hoffman,Jerry Rubin & Bobby Seale.I could go on for pages.Tagged book is a good overview, Hayden‘s Trial is directly related to the case.

Suet624 I‘m not surprised that it‘s you who would post about those times and these great books. I miss the activism that these folks inspired. 5y
squirrelbrain Sounds really interesting, but something I know nothing about.... I‘ve stacked the tagged book - thank you! 5y
Leftcoastzen @Suet624 Thanks ! I take it as a compliment. It shocks and saddens me we did not take more of the positives from that time.I am reminded every time some belligerent white man politician who belongs in the 1940s ( not that there were no progressives then)opens his mouth. 5y

Leftcoastzen @squirrelbrain Hope you enjoy it ! There is a lot to unpack in that cultural/historical moment. 5y
Suet624 @Leftcoastzen My comment was definitely meant as a compliment! It makes me sad to think of how many young folks know nothing of that period of time and the activism that took place. 5y
Crazeedi Such a horrible time, I remember this. Such violence 5y

#AyUpAugust #Day9 #IPredictARiot In the year that this book covers, August 1969 to August 1970, there were a few riots, a lot of protests and a ton of arrests with a few deaths as well. People don‘t realise just how close America came to a full revolution, there was a lot of people very unhappy about Vietnam, about civil rights & the corruption of high up government officials. People power made a lot of changes happen in those days.

squirrelbrain Sounds really interesting! You come up with some great ideas for these challenges! 5y
Bkwurm Sounds like a book that wouldn‘t be out of place on a 2019-2020 reading list. 5y
Cinfhen I‘ve already stacked this book too!!and I‘m pretty sure it was from one of your previous posts 😘 5y

#Stop ! #IPredictARiot ! Or, at least that‘s the feeling among the Russian people in the early 1900s. When the Romanov dynasty falls after hundreds of years of rule, a revolution is the cause. Rappaport tells the history of this turmoil through the eyes of foreign visitors, who witness firsthand the revolution and the dangers they now face. #ayupaugust

AlaMich This sounds very interesting! 5y
squirrelbrain I agree @AlaMich - it does sound interesting! 5y

With girls & then women developing the ability to shoot electricity out of their fingers, you can‘t help but say #IPredictARiot as the balance shifts & women begin to make a show of force with revolutions & riots across the globe.

squirrelbrain Enjoyed this one - and love your pic! ❤️👍😁 5y

“Once upon a time there was a hazel-eyed boy with dimples. I called him Khalil. The world called him a thug.
He lived, but not nearly long enough, and for the rest of my life I'll remember how he died.
Fairy tale? No. But I'm not giving up on a better ending.”

Luddite is a pretty pejorative term now but the destructive of new technology in northern English mills into the early 1800s was a protest over working conditions and deskilling during a time of economic upheaval. Shirley is set against this backdrop in West Yorkshire. #ayupaugust #IPredictARiot @Cinfhen @squirrelbrain

saresmoore It was Shirley that really helped me understand Luddite for the first time. History really does repeat itself. 5y
squirrelbrain I really should reread this one - haven‘t read it since I was a teen and I‘m sure it didn‘t mean much to me then.... 5y
