A compact, lyrical first novel by Australian Aboriginal author living in France, Tara June Winch. It‘s a coming if age story, written when she was 21. Her writing is beautiful. I was so pleased to read that it is on the Australian high school English curriculum. What a talent.

Her current novel The Yield is on the Stella Prize shortlist. 🤞👏😍

#JuneBookBugs #indigenouswriters I have a fair amount of books by local Hawaii writers, but finding ones by indigenous Hawaiian writers (who identify as being at least partially descended from Native Hawaiians) was tough. Not all of these five came from the same lists, but I wanted authors/books that I have read or at least are on my #TBR (Don Ho's bio, Song of the Exile & Hawaii's Story) & there's a favorite cookbook too! I'll link books👇🏽🌺

teebe @RowReads1 seems that way. His bio says "a descendant of the Mi'kmaq people (part of the Algonquin nation)" and the Mi'kmaq are NOT Algonquin. I'm Algonquin... we're in the same language family (Algonquian) as the Mi'kmaq language according to linguists, but they are two separate nations. Plus "descendent" always rings alarm bells for me. I've seen people call out the content of his books too. 7y

teebe @Louise I'm Algonquin, Mohawk and Tuscarora 😁 From Quebec and living in Ontario... but, well, it's all Algonquin territory anyway. Not many but there's Lynn Gehl, Jay Odjick, Rick Revelle, Albert Dumont, Jane Chartrand. 7y

I'm doing the #ReadingAroundTheWorld challenge and have found it really interesting so far to include aboriginal authors from the various countries. 7y

teebe @Louise Cool, I currently live in Ottawa. Hadn't heard about Reading Around the World until now but that's great. An Indigenous view of any country tends to be vastly different than the mainstream. I set myself a personal challenge recently that I'm going to read at least one book (but probably more) by an indigenous person from every continent. 7y
