While the main focus is on how to draw animals, plants and landscapes (step by step instructions), the first 100 pages introduce the reader to writing about nature. The goal of nature journaling is to see, to remember and to stimulate curiosity, to move through the world with joy. Pay attention not only to the happenings in the natural world, but also to the happenings within you. Write with the goal of knowing yourself and the world better. 🥰

Anna40 I love this chapter about diagramming birdsong: “Close your eyes to help you focus on sound. Raise your hand in the air and “conduct” the bird as it sings, lifting your hand at high notes, lowering it at low notes, wriggling your fingers for a trill… then start to mimic the sound as best you can. Try to whistle or hum it. Put words or nonsense syllables to what you hear and “sing” along with the birds. ❤️ (edited) 3w
Dilara This is so out of my comfort zone, I am very impressed 🙂 3w
Anna40 @Dilara I haven‘t tried diagramming birdsong and when I do I‘ll make sure no one sees me 😆 I also haven‘t done any nature drawings yet. He says not to focus on how good the drawing is at the beginning but to just draw. It‘s a skill that can be improved. I‘m certainly not going to do the scientific research he‘s conducting but I‘m looking forward to trying out some of the projects. 3w

I am an avid journaler, but apparently an even more avid journal purchaser. At my current rate of journaling, this is 3.5-4 years' supply. I have decided that I am not allowed to buy any more journals until 2027 (unless I start using them faster and need another sooner than that).

JenlovesJT47 Can relate! I have a box full of empty journals 😆 1mo
Sace I can‘t seem to resist buying them either…and I don‘t even journal on a daily basis. I love jotting notes about my day, but one page can easily have 5 or more days on it. 1mo
TheBookHippie Feel free to join us in #journalingprompts 🤣🤣🤣 I also have this problem… 1mo

ImperfectCJ @TheBookHippie This is tempting! I also have consistent intentions to follow this book. I'll do it for a few days/weeks then set it aside. 1mo
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ oh that looks good! 1mo
Suet624 I‘m with you all. 1mo
Anna40 This is wonderful. Do you have a set time when you write? Do you write every day? 1mo
DogMomIrene What brand do you like best? I bought some Moleskin journals and I was surprised how much my pen bled through. I did a pen test in the back and every pen I own showed through. I remember Moleskin being better quality, but that would have been years ago. 1mo
ImperfectCJ @Anna40 I do a check-in each morning and evening, and then I try to log a few things throughout the day. It's pretty Bullet Journal-inspired. 1mo
ImperfectCJ @DogMomIrene I agree about Moleskines. I used to use them a lot, but I wonder if they changed their paper. I can only use ballpoints without gel ink in them. I like Leuchtturm best overall these days, but Rhodia and Clairefontaine also have awesome paper and a lot of color options. 1mo
DogMomIrene @ImperfectCJ Thanks! I‘ll be checking those out. 1mo

In addition to the physical history, Roland also discusses how notebooks were used throughout history - in accounting, art, natural history, writing, etc. and various ways notebooks were perceived. I.e., in the 1200s when clergy refused to use anything other than parchment being suspicious of paper's novelty and its infidel and recycled origins: “one opponent fulminated against the idea that the word of God could be written on menses-stained rag.“

In this book Manson argues that once we stop trying to be “happy“ all the time, and instead become extremely familiar with what deeply pains us, we will discover what truly makes us happy.
I appreciated Manson's brutal honesty and his tell-it-like-it-is attitude really spoke to me. He advocates the importance of embracing our true selves in a world obsessed with perfection.

2.5/5⭐ There is some specific information for crafting a journal and drawing in it at the beginning, but the majority of the book is more for generic inspiration. Everything is basically “sit still and draw what you observe“ without much more detail. There are lots of examples with the author's notes about when she drew them. The book is more an exploration of the author's art journal than a how-to.

May was a good reading month- great books and my reading time was up despite being a busy month.
Notice my page count was down though so maybe a few of those minutes were for sleeping. 😅

If I HAD to pick a favorite for the month…Billy Summers.
