Mehso-so

Megan E. Freeman's book Alone is one of my favorite MG reads. I was so excited when I found out she had a companion novel. While Away was a good read, and I couldn't pinpoint anything wrong with it, it just wasn't as good as Alone. I didn't connect with the character as much and found myself a little bored at times.

A quick , fun read. What I LOVED was that Dan included pictures of the actual trip at the end of the book. His 13 year old self seemed like a such a sweet kid 💕

DebinHawaii I really enjoyed this one! 4h

While a bit slow to start I ended up enjoying this more the further I got. In a lot of ways this felt like Hunger Games with dragons, but with more camaraderie from the beginning. There was definitely more murder than I anticipated, but it upped the stakes in a satisfying way.

This is a story of a family dealing with some big things which come out slowly over the course of story. It‘s told in alternating chapters from the perspective of Ernest, one of the boys in the family who loves words, and Olivetti, the family‘s typewriter. The typewriter makes for an interesting point of view, and the story includes a wonderful group of characters.

Daisey @tpixie I decided this would be perfect for a quick listen this week. 1d
tpixie Oh good! Hopefully I can get to it soon! It looks like a fun read- having a typewriter narrator. Your tulips 🌷 are lovely colors! Thanks for the tag @Daisey 1d

Enlighten Me, by Minh Lê (illustrated by Chan Chau) (2023)

Premise: A graphic novel for children introducing some basic tenets and stories of Buddhism.

Review: This was surprisingly fun, sort of a like a kids‘ introduction to Buddhism crossed with the 8-bit adventure of Scott Pilgrim. I do wish however there was more story. Cont.

Mattsbookaday It is framed as the main character learning about Buddhism to help him deal with conflict at school but never actually addresses that in the end. But it was still fun and, pardon the pun, enlightening.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I‘m having the worst time settling into a book. I start one and then…I just don‘t pick it up again…so going with Morrigan Crow since this one has been on the shelf way too long. I really enjoyed the first book in the series so I‘m hopeful this one will not only grab but also hold my attention. (In fairness to the other books I‘ve started and then sort of left languishing, I must admit I think it‘s me not them…😬😂)

🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑 This book was highly recommended to me by a friend. It was a great light read, sweet and heartwarming, with a touch of tragedy and fear.

LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT I LOVE IT! Recognizing and accepting queer identity in the face of contentious cultural norms, fleshing out immigrant experience so that while the unique and possibly painful experience of immigration is not ignored, it doesn't try to be a monolith or fall into tropes, doesn't need to form the backbone of the story, interweaving fairy tales, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 in all their grimness and whimsy, absolutely gorgeous fantasy dress designs, a beautiful mother and son relationship, the author notes at the back, discussing language and fashion and his own experiences growing up. UGH, I LOVE IT!
